what songs / pieces of music literally take your breath away?
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 12:52 PM by charlie and algernon
edit: heh, little trigger happy on the posting.

I'm listening to Nessun Dorma and my god, the final cresendo never fails to take my breath away and there's such a wash of joy at the end of the cresendo as the soloist wraps up.

3. Indian Sunset by Elton John
Very powerful story (lyrics and music) about the death of Geronimo.

A couple of country songs:

- I'm tired of pretending I don't love you anymore - Travis Tritt
- One More Breath - Joe Diffie

23. Omar Faruk Tekbilek is probably easiest to find
there are lots of compilations - I especially like the music from Turkey (partly it is personal because I went there, also that is where it originated)

Mercan Dede from Turkey now living in Canada.

Dhafer Youssef and Anouar Brahem, Tunesia.

Ibn 'Arabí, Morroco.

Of course most famous, from Pakistan Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Has more of an Indian sound that is fascinating, but for me personally isn't as moving.

You can probably find stuff faster than me by just sampling off of Amazon. I rely a lot on a local radio program that covers the whole world so getting my fix of this particular genre is not as thorough as I might like! (you can read that as basically I don't know shit  )

Adrian Boreland was a sadly underappreciated genius and although the LP "From The Lion's Mouth" is The Sound's masterpiece, "Monument" is their best recorded moment:

21. A very different piece of music indeed - "The Stumble", by Freddie King,
the version done by the Blues Breakers about '65 with guitar by Eric Clapton. The guitar breaks are amazing.
He was playing an old Les Paul Model at the time.

Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 05:50 PM by DarkTirade
and I've posted this one a few times, but it is without a doubt the most powerful piece I've ever heard... and had the fortune to play.

Shostakovic's 8th string quartet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1mz0QP2Qug (1st movement)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjvTTfbpWjY (2nd)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_5qO8bqmQU (4th)

It starts of fairly slowly, but take the time to listen to each movement in order.

Of course. Played by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, the original date. It is simply the finest American composition.

Second would be "An American Beauty" rag composed by Joseph Lamb in (IIRC) 1913.

47. "The Moon and Antarctica" by Modest Mouse
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 07:03 PM by EastTennesseeDem
The first two songs are very good, very friendly and upbeat alt-rock songs, and then it takes a gradual turn for the surreal, and it gets more and more and more surreal, and by the time "The Stars Are Projectors (the ninth track) is over, I feel like I've been chewed up and spit out into space. The lavishly produced, astonishing musicianship and the accompanying existential songwriting continues to lull me into a trance. And then the final song ("What People Are Made Of") comes roaring in, and it is such a raw, hard, ingenious piece of music ... it just makes the album that much better. My all time favorite album, and there is no close second.
