What is it with the word "vile"? I can't honestly recall ever using it

in conversation myself, but I have seen it in several posts on GD today alone, and countless times over the last year or so...I have even been called "vile"
by folks on that forum at various times.

Is this some sort of progressive epithet now?

I remember back in the mid 60's many then-progressives were using Maoist language, usually incorrectly, and I'm wondering if "vile" is the new thing....

1. I use the word vile all the time.

It is one of my favorite words, and I often accompany the word with "wretched".

2. I think it's just more commonly used in the general culture

Words go in and out of popularity and this is vile's time. I don't remember hearing it so much in my youth.
