"Passion"
Today my husband sandbagged Pattee Creek. Spring run-off and all the rain caused floods. When school let out he carried children Across the rushing water.
When I was five our school flooded. Firemen in yellow slickers Carried us from the classroom.
When he tells me about his day I am a child lifted over rising water By a man she does not know And set upon higher ground.
I embrace him, say, Hero and he's embarrassed, his face colors. I like this work, he tells me. That's all he wants to say.
Then minute I met him I remembered How he helped me fly to dry land A long time ago and I have been looking for him since.
