Can you run 135 miles in under 24 hours?
The winner of the Badwater ultra, Marcos Farinazzo came in at 23:39:18. That averages to 10 minute miles and the last 10 miles has 5000ft of elevation gain.
Sorry if I've been annoying about this, but I'm amazed at these athletes.

14. You are going to/have read "Born to Run", right?
Isn't the Badwater the one through the worst salt flats in Death Valley?

20. Havent' read it
I'll check it out. I'm not a runner, but I'm a cyclist and the same person who runs this does a 508 mile 48 bike ride through the Mojave that includes Death Valley. I did a century ride with them and may do the double century next year.
I watched the documentary Running on the Sun about the race.
The race starts at the lowest point in Death Valley and goes up to the slopes of Mt Whitney

Cut off time is 60 hours, so there are still people on the course until 10PM tomorrow.

If you look at the old Aztec and Incan foot courier systems, those guys supposedly regularly clocked in less than 10-minute miles, but they only had to run until they hit the next courier station and handed off the message or package. According to Conquistador accounts, the couriers could (supposedly) transport fish from the Gulf of Mexico to Montezuma's table in Mexico City within 24 hours of the catch being unloaded on the closest Gulf beaches...which were about 150 miles away.

What called that to mind was something in my source for the courier systems -- Prescott's History of the Conquests of Mexico and Peru. It also has an anecdotal account of a Native American who managed to cover something like 100-125 miles in 24 hours, on his own. (I suspect Mr. Farinazzo had high-protein and performance supplements which the nameless native runner lacked.)

23. Did you follow the most recent RAAM?
That would be the Race Across America. The winner, Dani Wyss, bikes 3021 miles in 8 days, 5 hours, and 45 minutes. The winning 4-man team, Team RANS riding recumbent bikes, made it in 6 days 3 hours 40 minutes.

RAAM is a single stage bike race (no official breaks, the clock is always ticking) from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD. www.raceacrossamerica.org

Have you read "Born to Run"?

24. You're the second person to mention that book
I need a good book for vacation next month,I'll pick it up.

Saw some updates of RAAM on Velonews but didn't pay close attention. Probably should have since I could have gone to the finish in Annapolis. I happened to be in Atlantic City a couple of years ago when they had the finishers on the boardwalk. The organizer of Badwater was an early RAAM rider.

25. Update
The official finish line was closed due to a forest fire.
33 people have finished.
So far only 10 people have officially dropped. That means after almost 48 hours there are still runners on the road, of course at this point there is a lot of walking going on, still better than I could do.
