i'm just going to flat out say it
waterworld was not as bad as they said it was.

kevin costner did not deserve to be demoted to C list status because of it.

1. I thought that it was entertaining too
I'm thinking that there were folks in the industry who were just out to get him

Understandably, because that film lost a lot of money.
The tabloids said that Kevin Costner drank a 6 pack of beer and ordered a pizza every night, so the crew had to do all kinds of trompe l'oeil to minimize his beer belly.

2. Perhaps his destruction of "The Postman" helped?

5. I rather liked "the Postman."
Of course, as a Kevin Costner liker, I seem to be a minority around here.

3. Nope. You're wrong. It sucked.
You are tight about Costner not deserving to be demoted to C-list status for it though. In truth, he never deserved to be above C-list in the first place.

6. However, "Dances With Wolves" did not age well
The mullet!

And Mary McDonnell's feathery 'do didn't help in the 19th century credibility department.

8. I liked "Dances With Wolves."
But there was some sloppy directing, I must admit.

11. I liked it too
But for an Oscar-winning epic (in fact, the enormous success of it allowed him to do big projects like 'Waterworld' and 'The Postman'), I wish he had been more mindful of the mullet, lol. Graham Greene was my favorite actor in the film - he is an underrated presence in any movie.

My favorite Costner film is the decidedly non-epic "Bull Durham", which has none of the sap or cliches of "Field of Dreams" (which I do not care for). I think "Bull Durham" is the best baseball comedy ever made - largely owing to Tom Robbins and Susan Sarandon. Yes, it's even better than "Major League" in that category.

13. Oh, yes, Bull Durham . . .
Best Kevin Costner movie, and best baseball movie, ever. :)

9. Agree. One of my favorite movies is "The War" with Costner and young
Elijah Wood.

10. It was much worse than they said it was, and part of what was so bad was the (then) huge budget
kevin costner did not deserve to be demoted to C list status because of it.

Au contraire! He didn't deserve to be promoted to A-list status because of Dances with Wolves or Bull Durham or whatever film got him there.

He's like the Phil Collins of film, consistently several notches below average yet somehow afforded respect and admiration. Costner's acting style makes Keanu Reeves look positively dynamic, and at least Reeves has no illusions about his particular place in the entertainment scheme of things.
