Wow Between Insomnia, Financial troubles, & Stress....I have to Vent DU!!!
Edited on Wed Jul-15-09 01:41 AM by Corey_Baker08
I went to my family physician today and explained to him my inability to get to sleep until 6am, which has been ongoing for months now. My doctor explained to me that several factors could affect my inability to sleep such as stress over my financial situation, my starting school in the fall, as well as several other common factors.

Long story short my doc prescribed me 30mg capsules of a substance known as Restoral which is supposed to be a wonderful sleep aid. At 19 yrs old I was kinda worried about starting a prescription sleeping pill regiment but figured Id give it a shot. Unfortunately I took my first capsule at 11:30pm and it didnt help I tossed and turned until I took another capsule (mind you the reccommended dose is 1 30mg capsule per day) at about 1:00am. So now here it is 2:30am and I am still awake as ever wondering what the hell the problem is!!!

I am pretty sure that my parents both recently losing their jobs, my parents recieving an eviction notice because they couldnt pay their rent, and the overall financial hell my family is going thru and the grim outlook on the future is what is keeping my mind awake and racing...

So any DU remedies to help achieve sleep and turn off my racing mind? Theres no way Im gonna take 3 days worth of medication just to sleep tonight...Its almost like I feel like giving up but I know im stronger than that, I am not one of those bitching about why the economy isnt fixed yet, I am one wondering why if there is a god that he would sit back and watch as my family loses everything they have ever worked for and why he would watch me torment and beat myself up just wishing there is something I could do to help the ones I LOVE!!!

It just almost seems amazing to me that in my 19 short years of life, after watching my parents work factory job after factory job, after watching them scrape to make end meet over the course of my life that now, now of all time, Under the presidency of a man I have the upmost respect and admiration for and campaigned so hard for, that now I as well as my parents who work their asses off all their lives are only 1 week and $400 away from being homeless. I do however want to make perfectly clear I AM NOT BLAMING OBAMA FOR THIS In fact him being our President is what gives me the little bit of faith in humanity that I do still Have!!!

Sorry if I am bitching but venting actually does help...

1. okay, heres what you have to do
you over time train your mind by using the following technique, you run a kinda movie in your brain where you are the hero etc, nothing to risque, mayby a western or scifi, you run the same movie in your mind every time you want to sleep and try to keep the story line similar, after a few days your brain will shut down during the movie and the time fram will get shorter every time until you can sleep pretty much any where, trust me this technique has allowed me to sleep, in warm , cold, at sea, in combat and it never fails once you get the original conditioning done and it will serve you a lifetime.

2. I had sleeping pills once
when I was in labor, for a stupidly long amount of time (couple days). The doctor gave me sleeping pills. I took them, and went right on being wide awake, in pain, and cranky. He came in a few hours later and in a hushed tone was asking my husband if I was addicted to sleeping pills. In my head to the doctor: "WTF you know? DUDE. Let me smash your private parts with a sledge hammer every few minutes, you tell me if you can sleep through it."

sigh. I guess that's not really helpful. Unless you are in labor, I mean, and your physician missed that as a possible cause.

8. You're clinically depressed - that's my guess -
and when you're in that state, sleeping pills aren't going to work for you.

I wish I could offer you something to make your situation better, but I can't. Even if I were to urge you to get your physician to prescribe anti-depressants for you, they take about six weeks to start having any effect, and they're really not all that effective without concomitant talk therapy.

Talk to your doctor. There may be something else that will help you. But don't take any more Restoril. That's an awful lot of medication to have in your system, so just relax (yeah, right, I know) and try some of the fine suggestions here and I'll be thinking of you and your family, hoping for the best......................

15. You should absolutely NOT feel ashamed. You are in a situation that is very stressful
Edited on Wed Jul-15-09 02:30 AM by anneboleyn
and there is nothing wrong with needing some help. Talk to your doctor and get the help you need because this is a reasonable thing to do. You need to be able to sleep (see my post below).

16. Just keep this in mind -
you're someone very special. For a 19-year-old, you're way ahead of the pack, and your gifts are obvious. So is your great big heart.

You're going through a very hard time now, and it may be that there are even harder times ahead for you, but I will tell you this, and you'll think of it in years to come, and you'll smile, thinking that that crazy lady at DU was right:

You're going to have an extraordinary and wonderful life. You're a gifted, exceptional young man, and I doubt you could ever do anything except be true to your great big heart.

Hang in there, honey. Just hang in there. I don't know about any god, but I do know that things get bad, and then, sometimes in the most mysterious ways, they get better.

And keep in mind what I just told you. You're rare, you're quite wonderful, and you are going to have a splendid life, give a lot to this world....................................

13. You may want to see your doctor again and explain that the prescrip he gave you is not working --
Good sleep is absolutely **crucial** for your health -- mental and physical -- right now. The importance of this really can't be overstated. You won't be on sleeping pills forever, so I would not worry about that aspect of things but you do need something that works for you temporarily while you deal with a great deal of stress in your life.

Talk to your doctor again and explain that the medication did not work at all. Explain how serious your situation is so that he can (try to) understand why you genuinely need his help (if your insurance covers it you may also want to see a psychiatrist). There are numerous sleeping medications out there that are established as being very effective. If you haven't been doing research on your own, start reading about the different medications available (some work by enhancing natural sleep chemicals in the brain, for example) and ask your doc for samples if possible so you can try them without a full prescription. You may also need an anti-anxiety medication -- worth talking to him about this as well because it might make a world of difference for you.

17. that is quite a lot for you to have on your mind
for one thing, do NOT take more than the dosage your doctor prescribed. Sometimes that can have an opposite effect of what the drug is intended for. I dont know about that particular drug, but I know cold medicines that usually make me sleepy will actually keep me from sleeping if I have too much.

And it is just a bad idea period to take too much of any medication. People can unwittingly overdose when they start that.

If you dont have to do anything tomorrow, just stay up and do something that you enjoy, and sleep will come when your body and mind are ready for it.

I am sorry to hear about your parents, I hope they find something soon.

20. Chronic pain causes stress.
Even when an old injury site has healed chronic pain can be persistent for years. Severe pain also causes cognitive impairments.
