My nephew was just taken off life support.

35 years old. First onset of symptoms was about ten days ago. Tests of various sorts were scheduled for this week, but he was hospitalized on an emergency basis a few days ago - on Friday night. CAT scan, blood work, etc run late Friday, and early Saturday AM. Pancreatic cancer was diagnosed at that time.

He went downhill rapidly, and was placed on life support Sunday. His parents directed his removal from life support about a half hour ago. According to the attending physician, his passage could be within a few hours, or it could take a couple of days.

Good thoughts and wishes for his gentle passage would be welcomed.

Apparently pancreatic cancer doesn't cause symptoms early on, and by the time it does it's often too late. Even with that, though, the docs were surprised at how aggressive it is.

It is a very brave thing for the parents to let him go. I'm sure it has been very difficult for them to think logically and rationally at a time like this, but they are obviously thinking of him in allowing him to pass.

I'm actually a bit surprised, pleasantly so, by it, particularly in his mother's case. She's the archetype of the female predator who will defend her young unto death. She and her husband are both academicians, however, and each of them are both logical and rational. I believe that the attending physician probably laid out the options, probabilities, and the downsides for their son, and they made their choice accordingly. Even though it broke both of their hearts. He was their oldest child.

I also want to remind everyone to have a colonoscopy. The pancreas, liver, and kidneys are routinely checked, not just the colon. I've had three in the past three or so years, one routine and the other two due to diverticulitis, and while the prep isn't much fun, the procedure is a total breeze. It won't kill anyone, but undetected cancers will.
