6. Cool. What camera?
I need to look into good macro lenses for my (roommate's) Nikon, so I was hoping you had used a standard macro, but never even took into account you might not be using a Nikon, haha.

11. Most beautiful photos REP. You should be most proud.
Unfortunately, I don't have any flowers as attractive as your Daisy's because the wild animals around here eat everything in sight. But, that hasn't stopped me from shooting thousands of photos of the local wild flowers (weeds in the fence-row and around the pond) with my XSi in an effort to learn macro photography and lighting techniques.

Common Thistle.

Amorous beetles on grass before the act.

Same couple upon completion of the act (he just remembered that he has someplace else that he needs to be.) I'm so pissed at myself for screwing up the lighting on this one. They moved at the last moment and there was no opportunity to correct the lights. It could have been a great photo. Maybe next time.

13. Excellent! What lens?
(Like another lens will make me better - but I do think I need a 100mm macro).

In my own defense, I've only been taking photos for a year now. In about 10, I may be able to take some as excellent as yours!

15. Your photos are wonderful and the 60mm is a great lens.
My photos were taken with the Canon 180mm with (if I remember correctly) 12mm+25mm+36mm of extension tubes. I just bought the Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens and I also plan to purchase the Canon 100mm 2.8. After all, you can't have too many primes.

I love the 180mm, but I damn near sent it back when I first got it. I couldn't shoot a decent photo with it to save my soul. After hundreds of awful photos it finally dawned on me to add a flash so I could use a faster shutter and a much smaller aperture. The improvement was immediate and almost startling. I now try to take everything indoors so I can use a tripod, focusing rails, and studio strobes. But, that's not always possible so I always keep an on-camera flash close by.

Macro lenses aren't just for small objects up close. These photos were also shot with the 180mm.

16. I have the macro ring lite MR-14EX
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 02:58 AM by REP
Super useful; I also need a lot more practice with it, but the default mode works, and sometimes, by pure chance, I set it manually well.

I use the 60mm for damn near everything:

on edit: Totally forgot to say THANKS!! for the lovely compliment ... even though I know you're being super polite!!

I was busy typing a responce (rather than paying attention) when a scheduled update rebooted my computer. I was going to mention the Canon macro lights, but I see that you already own one. Someday I hope to also own one, but currently I'm spending my photo money on studio equipment (lights, stands, macro rails, backdrops, etc.)

I mounted the XSi and 180 on top of a 13' light stand and put it in front of my Wren house. Using a cheap ($20) wireless shutter release I got this photo.

18. My "studio" is a corner of my desk with good sunlight and enough backspace for grey backgrounds...
It all started when I started growing orchids and joined an online group. I bought a decent point n shoot ... and ended up winning a small contest, so my husband bought me the XSi and the macro lens (we had a tripod). I'm not trying to be falsely modest; I think I'm not a bad novice, but I know I need to learn lots more and get better! I love your wren shot (and the house)!

19. There's no doubt that you're well on your way.
I really like the photos in post 16. Particularly 1 & 3.

For me, being unemployed and old has provided the motivation (I really could use the income and at almost 60 years of age it's unlikely that anybody is going to hire me) to learn a new profession. Living alone has allowed me the time and space (I've moved all the furniture out of the living room) to practice and experiment.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to earn a living shooting photos, but I know for sure that it won't happen if I don't try.

Best regards, Mugu
