I grew up in each of these planes, dad would buy them in sorry shape and with the help of a friend who was a AMP and corporate pilot would fix them up, fly them, sell them. We also had a super cub, a Musketeer, and a 140.

25. No, but I know of it, 2 teens, flying...
So, when I was 16 dad says, "If you'll buy the gas, I can get you ground school and lessons through the club (we were in a 10 plane syndicate at the time) and flight time is basically covered. What do you think?"

My reply, and what I now recount as the first bad decision of my life" "I'd rather have a motorcycle."

26. The story is basically the same
Two kids' dad would rebuild a plane in their barn over the winter. The two kids decide to do it themselves one winter and they fly a restored cub to California. It's an excellent read.

My dad always loved aviation, but he never got his pilot's ticket. We used to build model airplanes together and dream about flying. I was obsessed with them as a kid (and still am).

33. The B-17's bomb bay was small because it carried a small bomb load
On long range missions, it could only carry about 2-3 tons of bombs. In comparison, a B-52 can carry about 35 tons of bombs and still fly a lot farther.

My BIL did the flying shots when they used the 310. Also flew it for "Sky" during promo visits. BIL sat in right side so "Sky" would be in the 'pilots' seat when they would pull up. "Sky" would be doing exaggerated steering motions with his arms, while BIL steered the 310 with the pedals. What a joke!

Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 10:03 PM by Brother Buzz
I had an old friend, a retired airline pilot, that flew one of the surplus T50's that was granted a one day license from the FAA. He took off from Long Beach and flew around So Cal/Apple Valley while they filmed stock footage. He landed the plane in Apple Valley where it became part of the set. I don't know if it's a true story, but as the saying goes, "De mortuis, nihil nisi bonum".

my BIL, then retired jet fighter jock, went into advertising, and spent many days doing things like flying Cessnas over the Golden Gate for stock photo images, etc. A tough gig. Also did some hot flying for Cessna for dealer shows, did a slow roll over the runway in a 210 in wichita to the consternation of ATC.

I just recently got back into photography. After many years of my old film camera just sitting on the shelf I finally got a decent digital camera.

Most of the planes listed aren't all that obscure. I see most of them flying around every weekend around here. I'm not really all that good at identifying them, it's just the ones listed so far are pretty easy.

67. You are correct, sir!
It is a PA-16 Piper Clipper, built in 1949. My ex and I bought it for $7,000 in the 80's. It came like that, so don't blame me for the ugly paint. Still registered and flying (but repainted), as far as I know. My flight instructor was a big man from Iowa, and I'm no lightweight, either. It truly had "the glide ratio of a brick" when we went up together. We never tried carrying four in it, despite the back seat. Made a good luggage compartment, though. Had a lot of fun learning to fly in a taildragger, except when I groundlooped it and took out the runway light. Also it had an aux fuel tank in the right(?) wing, which made for some interesting flight characteristics when fully fueled. Main tank was under the instrument panel in front of our knees. Had sticks, not yokes, and two sets of rudder pedals, but only one set of pedals were connected to brakes. Instructor was at my mercy on the ground. Did I mention groundlooping it? I had to solo on a grass field, because it was just too fast on asphault. That was the last time I flew, too, as I was on orders to Germany, and the wife took it in the divorce, before I ever had another chance.
