Adults arrested after 3 children found in trunk in Bedford (Va.)

BEDFORD — Police who stopped a car on U.S. 460 in Bedford found three children in the trunk.

The three adults in the car were arrested on charges of child endangerment and were held Wednesday at the Bedford jail.

Capt. Mike Miller of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office said a worker at a fast-food restaurant saw the adults putting the children in the trunk Monday. The vehicle was stopped about five minutes later.

Miller said the adults told police a second car had broken down and they decided to put the children in the trunk to make room.

The children, ages 8, 9 and 11, were released to relatives.

Officials did not know if the three adults had retained an attorney.
