30. It's a quote from some TV movie...
...probably from the mid 90's, about the Beatles' formative years. John's trying to talk Stu out of quitting the band, and in that beautiful accent of his he says something to the effect of "You don't want to be old and gray and have people point at you on the street and say 'There goes Stu Sutcliffe. 'E could've been in the Bea-'les.'"

That's stuck in my head for years.

13. George Martin
Without George Martin's classical background, the Beatles would not have realized much of their success late in their career(s). George Martin does not get near the credit he deserves. Of course, the drugs didn't hurt either.

19. Pete played drums
He was with the Beatles until the day they recorded their first album, IIRC. He was replaced by a local session drummer, Richard Starkey.

31. I'm not sure how much I like the new Wilco album yet.
They took a lot of the edge off for Sky Blue Sky and this certainly continues that trend. I love Sky Blue Sky, so maybe I just need to get more into this one.

"Now available at Starbucks- Wilco's latest!" Ugggg!

Jesus I wish they would make another rock & roll record instead of this "safe" mini-van soundtrack, coffee shop crap. The new stuff is almost worse than Sheryll Crow or the Plant/Krauss CD.

Get out while you still can- you heard it here first. ;)

Wilco's "nesting period".

Sounds about right.

BTW, I know that Wilco isn't as cool as they used to be when on Facebook I see that Art Fucking Stine is looking forward to going to the show.

Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 01:52 PM by Dr Fate
Art? LOL! I noticed the same thing and thought the same thing-and just to be clear, I dont judge the "coolness" of music by who their fans are- but it can be an indicator...

If people who like lite pop & Christian rock are digging Wilco, that could mean that the Christian rocker is getting something right for a change...but it also might indicate that Wilco is getting it wrong.

ON EDIT: This deserves it's own thread, I'm in the mood for mindless confrontation.

23. George -
he was the one who was most experimental, who seemed to be truly dedicated to music, and who ventured into some really interesting things after the Beatles - like the movies he produced.

I can listen to his solo albums - yesterday, it was Concert for Bangladesh, not quite solo, I know - forever................

32. John, because I don't think they would have gone the distance without him
1). George: Talented, but content to be the guitar player and let Lennon-McCartney limit him to 1 or 2 songs per album

2). Ringo: The drummer. For Ringo, that was enough.

3). Paul: Half of the biggest piece of the "creative team pie," still performing and recording in 2009, but the guy who burned with the "bigger than Jesus" thing was John, not Paul.

33. George may have been content with that in the earlier years
when he was insecure about his songwriting and performing ability, but as he gained more confidence, he became frustrated that he remained limited. So after a while, he was being shafted. That was why All Things Must Pass was a triple album--he had so many songs collected and so much to say after years of being stifled.

Guess who my favorite is?

37. Oh, I agree completely...that's what I meant...
...because if it weren't for the impact of the "earlier years," they never would have gotten out of Liverpool. They'd probably all be working in that bakery with Pete Best.

"All Things Must Pass" is widely regarded as absolute proof of the talent that was shackled during the Beatles years. Of course, like any other songwriter (Lennon & McCartney included), George has gifted the world with occasional crap (like the "Gone Troppo" album, for instance). The famous exchange between McCartney & Harrison in the "Let It Be" movie tells it all, where he dryly tells Paul that he will play whatever he wants "if it will please you."

I actually like some of Gone Troppo--perhaps I am too much of a George fan? :P I like "Mystical One" and "Circles".
