Where was the most beautiful place you vacationed or visited?
I haven't traveled much so I'm pretending that I'm in the Amazon today - doing data entry for a handsome exploring professor....

One of the most beautiful places in the US (but I'm biased).

80. We entered via the gas line maintenance trails just south of Kane.
I copied the topographical maps from the University library (Clarion) and found a nice flat area near the top of the ridge between Martin and Crane run. We scoped it out a few weeks earlier and found a path to the creek that took 15 minutes down and 20 back with water. It was perfect. Even splashing around naked in sub-freezing water (at least it felt like it) was nice.

:-) We spent our short weekend honeymoon in Clarion with hiking in Cook Forest and the ANF. We were married in March, so it was still pretty cold here. Never thought we would be able to retire here.....it's like a dream.

That's one of the prettiest places anywhere. The canoe rental thing is awesome. If you're lucky, you can catch a great blue heron gliding just above the water.

Even with the evil trouble-making squirrels I'm sure it was an amazing adventure! Was it hard to hike back up? I remember seeing tiny little lines on donkeys on trails below, but I would get queezy when I got too close to the edge.

33. Well hiking down is rougher on the knees and feet
hiking up is of course physically more demanding (especially as the top is roughly a mile above sea level). Plus having lived on freezed dried rations (that the squirrels didn't get) wouldn't exactly count as carb packing.

I am not a big fan if heights and much to my dismay they never installed railings on the trail. You often hike trails that have steep drop offs that go down hundreds of feet. There is a rule, when encountering a hiker coming in the other direction, about who goes to the outside. I made up my own rule that basically said I cling to the rock wall while you go around me.

24. Even if you go there it's hard to get an idea of it's size
The Grand Canyon essentially goes from Lake Powell to Lake Mead and is roughly 200 miles long. So unless you're looking at it from space, there's simply no way to see all of it at once.

It's one of the few places I've traveled to that I've decided I don't want to go back. It was beautiful, but I'm afraid it's changed a lot since then and not necessarily for the better. I think it's gotten a lot more crowded. We actually anchored one night between the Petons. It was a lovely spot.

35. I did go by myself. It was the summer after I graduated from
High School in 1963. At that time, you could actually hike into places in the Sierras and not see anyone else. That's no longer the case, I'm afraid. Even the remotest spots will have a small population in the summer now.

Backpacking wasn't even really a popular thing to do back then, and the equipment wasn't as light or well-designed. My parents weren't exactly thrilled about my solo trip, but didn't object too strenuously.

Sadly, I didn't take a camera with me.

The Maze would take a bit of planning.

You can do most of the Needles area with day hikes. I spent a week there and hiked over 70 miles. It's spectacular.

Island in the Sky can be done with a vehicle and short hikes.

Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 11:27 AM by abq e streeter
My first time was camping around Ouray and Silverton in '73 And played Telluride for the first time ( in a club in town) during their very first jazz festival in 1977. There isn't an inch of the San Juans that aren't breathtaking...and the Grand Canyon too---no matter how many times you see pictures, the first time you actually see it is spellbinding.

It's that classic South Pacific plunging green cliffs/bluer-than-blue water combo.

I'd like to see more of that type of beauty and go to Tahiti, Bora Bora and exotic places like that.

54. It's really hard to pick the best place
I've been all over the world and there's lots of places that are beautiful in their own way. It would be like asking if I like apples or oranges better. I like them both and I wouldn't want to choose.

There's lots of great places overseas. The Alps are breathtaking. The islands in the south Pacific are incredible. Both France and Germany have some great sights to see.

As far as the US goes, I've been to most of the major national parks. I really don't have a favorite. Yosemite is nice and you can see all the high points in a couple of days or spend weeks hiking and camping and not see everything. Yellowstone is vast, and there's really no way to do it justice in just one visit because you get overwhelmed pretty quickly. Glacier and the Grand Tetons are great in their own ways. I think Glacier is probably the most incredible place on earth to put in a canoe or kayak. The Grand Canyon is awesome and you really have to either float down it or fly over it to really appreciate the vastness of it. I really like the 4 corners area around Mesa Verde, Durango, and Telluride, particularly in early October when the trees are turning.

I couldn't choose one. Yes, one is a quaint yet quiet and serene town on a beautiful lake and Tahoe is part of nature's glorious beauty. But even though I was in a desolate desert, the pyramids made me cry - it had a an overpowering, majestic beauty to me.

A beautiful country with lovely people and a nice balance between traditional and modern lifestyles and scenery. Didn't see enough of it last time so I'll have to go back again at some point

Oh, and the stay in a 4-star hotel (which had the qualities of a luxury hotel) at a cheap price helps as well:)

Other than that, Niagara Falls in the US/Canada, Ottawa in Canada, Singapore and some of the holiday resorts in Malaysia and Indonesia are up there as well

I was there for a conference during that period last year, and though I've traveled extensively and there's a special place in my heart for all of Italy, the gorgeous old civilizations of the rest of Europe, the warm and welcoming beauty of Central and South America, all of the Caribbean, and a jillion places in the US, the Upper Engadine Valley of Switzerland absolutely took my breath away. I could not have imagined that after living in Switzerland for a decade that I had missed these heart-stopping glacial lakes, the myriad colors, the heights and depths and the natural goodness of the people I encountered during my journeys through the Upper Engadine.

74. Molas Lake, CO -
Between Montrose and Durango, July, 1969, before it all become open to the world and sadly commercialized, we went on a three-month honeymoon, camping from St. Louis to San Diego, up the coast to the Canadian Rockies, across Canada, and then down through International Falls, back into the States.

One of the loveliest spots we found was this deserted little lake, just outside Silverton. No one around for miles, certainly no other campers. Just us and the dog and our tent for a week.

Perfection.....................

76. mentioned camping outside Silverton on my post on this thread--truly spectacular country
you beat me there by 4 years though...was still pretty unspoiled then too. Even when I first played in Telluride in '77, it was still a laid back little mountain town. Haven't been there ( north of Durango anyway) since about 1990 but I guess Telluride, especially, is now a playground of the rich and trendy. I'm guessing Ouray, Silverton etc, are having that happen to some extent too (?), (although I still love Durango, as touristy as it is now).

We are trying to plan on saving enough money to fly my husband's daughter down from Denver and take her with us next year. I would like to do it in May so we can attend Spring Strawberry, or maybe even Fall Strawberry. Friends out there I'd like to meet and spend time with, too. But, either way, the plan is to see the Grand Canyon on the way there or back so not sure how much time I would get to actually be there to attend the festival. Still up in the air and no guarantee that any of it will even happen. We really have to scrape and save to make it a reality.

Thanx for sharing! :hi:

117. Well I hope you do.
The spring festival takes place on Memorial Day weekend which is a very crowded time at Yosemite. But if you timed it so that you were there in the couple of days before the weekend, that is one of the best times to visit Yosemite. The waterfalls will be in full flow, and if Glacier Point road and Tioga Road are open, virtually the entire park will be accessible. Fall is also an excellent time to visit Yosemite as it is much less crowded than in the summer. However by fall, most of the waterfalls are bone dry or just a trickle. The park is still beautiful even without the water.
Grand Canyon is certainly worth a visit too, as it is truly an awesome sight to behold. But for my money Yosemite is better. You might even want to extend the trip over to the coast, too, and see the incomparable Point Lobos State Reserve and drive Highway 1 through the Big Sur country if you have time. Point Lobos and Yosemite Valley are the 2 most beautiful places in the world, in my opinion.

97. Owens River Valley in the early, mid, and even late fall.
From southern Bishop all the way up to Mammoth, really.

I'm an L.A. suburbs guy who usually prefers going to the beach or the desert to get away from it all. So creeks and creek fishing and woods and mountains and all natural (and au natural) hot springs are like being on another planet for me. First time I went there it was for the weekend and I ended up staying for four months. Got out of there as soon as the snow started to fall. God-DAMN that shit is cold! Did you know that?

Soon as I start to travel (if I ever do), that's gonna change, though. Of course, a lot of the places I wanted to go are out of the question now (thanks a lot Bushco), but I think I could probably navigate Western Europe and keep my head on my shoulders.

But yeah...the Owens River Valley in the fall. Nice...

It is ever so difficult for me to understand how someone confronted with such beauty could entertain thoughts of genocide. It is truly something straight out of a storybook. I was lucky enough to visit there when I was stationed in Frankfurt. I got to go to a local salt mine, and take a day trip to Salzburg where we went in a salt mine, saw the hills that were alive in "The Sound of Music", and visited Mozart's birth house. I also went in the Nazi war bunkers, which was intriguing to me as I was previously at the Cabinet War Room, which was Churchill's bunker in London.

I'd say Lake Tahoe runs second.

111. I was there on June 5th

And I took this picture of this lot for sale, which is right in front of Carson Peak. It's on "Dream Mountain Drive" and you could build a small house right in the middle of the lot, in the grassy area, surrounded by trees, with a year-round stream going through the lot, a view of a seasonal waterfall, and Carson Peak and the Ansel Adams Wilderness as your backyard. Literally you could walk out your door and go on a hike in the eastern Sierras. This picture I took shows the lot (I think it said Lot #6 on Dream Mountain Drive). The only downsides: I think the road to it may be closed in the winter, and the price is about $300,000 - just for the lot. The whole area was beautiful, I felt like we were in Switzerland or something, and it's just a stone's throw from the desert-like Highway 395.

132. A place so remote, few have visited.
Two hours by road from my home town in Mexico. Then an hour by dirt road, and another hour by motor boat, upstream the San Lorenzo river.

To a small waterfall in the middle of nowhere, with a crystal clear pool under the waterfall.

The water was so filled with fish, you could scoop them out with your hands.

The trees surrounding the waterfall where ahuehuetes - the ancient ones. Probably there since before the Conquest.

40 years hence, and the memory is still vivid in my mind.
