Cat folks, what's the easiest way to move the cat litter box?
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 03:05 PM by supernova
My furry kids are now occupying a back bedroom that I want to use for my office and the floor is wood. This is the room I put them in when I first got them at 5 weeks.

I would like to move their box to the back porch and the concrete floor 1) because it would be easier to clean and 2) to reclaim my "office." ;-)

How do I do this without upsetting their routine too much?

edit: Their meal/drink bowls are there too and I'd like to move the whole kitt 'n kaboodle to the kitchen and back porch.

1. Most kitties will make the move without any problems,
just take them to the new location and show them their toilet has been relocated. If you think they will insist on returning to your office, you can put food or water where their box was located. Or you can discourage them by putting some crinkled up aluminum foil or one of those citrus scented deodorizers in the spot. Warning though, despite what some experts say about citrus smells my cat's response was to pee on the orange smelling thing. :hi: Good luck.

3. I think you just move it
Show them the new spot and that's it. Never had any problems when I've moved the box.

4. Do it while they can watch you make the move. I'd keep the back bedroom door shut
for a day or two until you're sure they've figured out the new location is permanent.

7. food relocation will be no problem
doubt if litter box will be either, but don't clean it too thoroughly - you want the "identification" smell, but you also don't want to turn them off with too much "dirt"

Keep an eye on them and pick them up and move them to the correct spot if it looks like they are lost or an accident might happen. Shouldn't take more than a day or so.

8. Strap it to their little backs and make them do the work.
You ARE feeding them, after all! ;-)

Seriously, as long as they see you move the box, it should be fine. You might want to leave a little of their poop in there, just so the realize the box is intended to be used in the same way they've always used it. :hi:

9. I've moved alot over the years and my cats never had trouble finding the new location of the kitty
littre box. They just follow their noses.

10. Just remember to have sufficient room seperating food and litterbox
Since there's not a lot of uncarpeted area in our house with our indoor fur kiddies, we have to have the liteter box in the kitchen. We have it behind an island counter, with their water (shared with the dog) on the other side of the island counter.

Cats don't like to have their litterbox too near their food source, and if there are territorial issues, a litterbox in sight of food source can cause issues.

11. Get a second box and move that to the new location so they get used to one out there.
Then remove the other.
