I Guess I got Humped Last Night
For a college that pays for all the materials, it's sad they say "Go out and buy this book: ______________"

But what's $50 compared to only $3000 per quarter...

1. It's a shame what they charge for books...
Even worse..the buy-back program. Talk about getting screwed.

Just bought my kid several MCAT study books. Let's just say...:wow:

2. They don't... for the classes, they provide books that often have little relevance to the class.
But in honesty, this is the first class where we've been told to buy a book from the bookstore.

The other three books were pertinent to their respective classes, especially the business-centric book for my other class.

It'd have been nice, but I bought the book anyway. I know the instructor was trying to get updated equipment for the lab (and also shot down), so there could be a perspective I'm oblivious to, such as his attempt to get them to pitch in for _____ as well... he'd mentioned he tried getting wacom tablets to be paid for by the school and that didn't go very far either...

He's an EXCELLENT instructor. Honest, to the point, and helps students where it's needed. He's definitely doing his part... or comes across that way and not in a bad way... :)

4. Textbooks are like prescription drugs.
The professor (doctor) prescribes the textbook (drug), and the student (patient) pays for it.

The manufacturers have cozy relationships with people who choose products that other people have to buy. That's why the prices are so high.

5. I agree...
My kid's school *requires* that textbooks be purchased in their bookstore, even if you can find the book a hundred bucks cheaper on Amazon or wherever.

6. That requirement is unusual.
At most schools they merely preach at you, suggesting that is is somehow immoral or disloyal to buy books anywhere else.

7. Maybe since it's a private college?

8. I wonder how that rule is enforced.
Would your kid be kicked out of the class if s/he didn't buy the book from the college bookstore?

At most schools, the instructor and the administration don't know who buys what at the bookstore.

10. I did buy my kid a Calc book online a few years back...
It was $90 versus the school's $210 (same book) The Calc professor noticed, made a comment, but didn't seem to care.

I do know that the books sold in the bookstore have a certain marking on them that cannot be duplicated.

12. I keep trying to find them online, cheaper....
If my kid gets reprimanded for it, then I'll get them from the bookstore. But until then.....:)

9. 50 dollars is cheap.
The book for the business writing class I'm teaching is 120! And that's paperback!
