I am losing my faith in humanity. |
|
I am angry, manic, and have little hope for the human species. People SUCK!
Please, anyone, tell me why I should have any love for my species. WHY!
no kitty pics please, they will just make me madder.

12. Vaccinations, antibiotics, human rights activists |
|
The fact that by and large we are moving in the right direction as a species. The world has more medicine, human rights and freedom than we did 50 years ago and I think the trend will continue. In the US we fight for universal healthcare and gay rights, but in the middle east they fight for women's rights. In Iran they fight for real democracy.
Medical advances, human rights advances and civil rights advances are what I usually fall back on when I feel like we are a fucked up species.

14. good point, thank you |
|
unfortunately I wonder about the people we are saving, and those we are not. does money make all the difference between life and death, between a lengthy surgery to save an arm or a breast, or chopping off a piece of someone cause it costs less.
rights, yes we have more and that is good, very good. but sometimes when I come across someone who doesn't believe in those rights, and can't even say live and let live, and actively tries to take them away, I become nauseated.
But again, thanks. It is nice to know that I am not the only person who has had to sit back and think, " Is mankind worth anything?"

15. Yeah, you aren't alone in thinking 'it this worth it' |

I go through that, and I have learned that focusing on the fact that by and large we seem like a species that takes 3 steps foward and one step back helps me feel that yeah we are worth it.
I know it sounds trite, but people make alot of mention of the fact that the US spends more on its military than every other nation on earth combined (we spend about 600 billion, the rest of the world combined spends about 500 billion). However we spend 4x more on healthcare than we do on the military (2.4 trillion), and we spend about 2x more on education than we do on the military (I think about 1.5 trillion goes to education. Mostly public but some private). Social security is about as big of an expense as the military. So we spend 7x more money on healthcare, pensions for the elderly and education than we do on the military. Most other nations can say the same, most spend about 20-30% of GDP on education, pensions for the elderly or disabled and on healthcare, but only about 2-3% on the military.
Things like that do give me hope. We aren't a perfect species, but we are a species that spends far more money on medicine, protecting the elderly and education than on war.

I was sick with the H1N1 flu and took a turn for the worse. I tried to drive myself to the ER but lines were down and traffic was stopped. I pulled over, left my keys in the car and walked up to the police. They called over an EMT who checked things out - took me in the ambulance to the ER where I got help immediately. I told the EMT I had tried to avoid the cost of an ambulance - she informed my they were volunteers there was no charge. The police took care of moving my car, parked it someplace secluded and safe and brought me my keys and told me where it was parked - they brought the keys to me in the ER. I got treated immediately. When released - I didn't have any money to call a cab to get back to my car. The chief nurse found out their were two security agents in the ER and one of them took off and drove me to my car at 3AM. I didn't know any of the people that helped me - they all had other jobs they were in the middle of - I was a bother to everyone I came across and everyone of them helped me out. - and this is NY.
