How many cats have you owned?
If I wasn't allergic and didn't have finch a la carte, I'd have about 60 cats...

And be a Russian chick too...

1. At a time, or total?
The most I've ever had at one time was 4 (3 of my own, one being kitty-sat). Otherwise I've stayed with 2 or 3. Total cats, 12: Kitty, Blackie, Tulip, Charles, Alice, Leonard, Spot, Teddy, Woody, Milo, Jeoffry and Pixie.

4. At a given time, preferred... I doubt anybody could top more than 130 in real life...
As for the name "Spot" being attributed to a cat:

5. Spot was a calico. It just fit.
As a practical matter, once you start going beyond single digits in cat quantities, things get complicated. Just aside from the expense and keeping the litter boxes clean, cats tend to be drama queens and there are always these intricate and recondite cat conflicts going on. Unless you have a pretty big house, your life with many cats could get weird in a hurry.

But there is a dead one in my front yard right now. Must have gotten run over last night. I guess I need to bury him.

3. Any pic of the surrounding tire tracks?
:D

If it's your front lawn, it'd show... unless it's concrete, but most people have grass, trees, flowers, and little plastic gnome figures strewn about... you don't have any little gnome things in your lawn, do you? They might have became pancakes along with the pussycat...

7. Cat in yard
No, I do have grass and a tree, I also live on a busy road. I moved him from the street late last night so he wouldn't become a "pancake". He is buried now. And no I don't have any gnome things on my lawn.

6. You mean how many have owned YOU
You don't own cats, it's the other way around.
For a long period of time, I was owned by two Persians, a mother and a son.
The son, Boo on the left and mama Tisha on the right

Here is a better picture of Boo

For a short period of time (twice) I was owned by seven-Tisha and her six kittens (and we found homes for all of them).
Unfortunately I don't have any of the cuter kitten pics scanned, but here is Boo's sister, Mitzi

Mostly I am only owned by one at a time. This is my current owner:

8. Are you kiddin'? Humans don't _own_ cats.
In the interest of accuracy, I will tell you that I've had the good fortune of having been chosen to serve one cat: The Wiley and Excellent Boy Cat Named Ginger, shown here test-piloting my brand new red leather chair about one minute after it was delivered and before I ever had a chance to enjoy it. Hierarchy: never underestimate its relevance in everyday life.

10. In my adult life, with my boyfriend/husband, four (plus a bunny).
Prior to that, growing up with the kitties my parents had when I lived with them, probably ... wait ... let me count ... about fourteen, plus some "temporary" stray kitties that we found homes for, plus some hangers-on that liked our yard.

Kitties ... Life is unlivable without 'em. :loveya:

We had a dog for a little while ... I concluded I'll never be a dog person.

12. I had five until just recently ...
Marcus' bed is still here, vacant. Nigel was in it when I got back from saying my last goodbye to him and I thought for one swift moment "he's here, still here" and my heart lifted for just a flutter. Then I realized that of course it was Nigel, moving right in. The funny thing is that by the next day he was sleeping NEXT to Marky's bed, maybe with his head on the bumper, but neither he nor any of the other cats have climbed into his bed again. I had washed it immediately and after a bit I relocated it, but I gave up and put it right back where he liked it. I kind of hope he is still enjoying it.

I am still calling him out of habit when I call the cats to me...maybe he's hanging around for me.

I don't know why I'm bringing this up here. I just read about Swifty's passing and it brought up a whole new rush of grief for my dear boy.

Sorry.

14. Had three at one time once.
My roommate was a printmaker and everything had to be in series. He talked me into three black cats. Being black cats he wanted to name them pretentious African tribe names: Madinga, Zulu, and Masai.

I'm from the south where everybody has to have a nickname, so I just called them Booger, Bullethead and Fat Bastard.

18. At present, I am an indentured servant to 8 cats.
It was 7 until last week, when one of the "ferals" I've been feeding decided to move in. I named her Ripley, as in, "believed it or not, there's another cat in this house". She's a little tiger striped kitteh, looks just like my other 2 tigers. I didn't even notice she wasn't mine until one of the dogs decided she should do a "meet and greet". THAT was interesting, to say the least. Kitteh explained the new rules of the road and now we're just one big happy family-8 kittehs and 3 very tolerant doggies.

41. 3 cats let us live here now
Loki, who is a 14 pound white cat, his sister, Boo, named for Boo Radley, because she never makes a sound & Chester,a Ginger Tabby we adopted from a local animal shelter. We had a cat named Butttons for almost 12 years- he died of cancer. He was a great cat- he played fetch, came when called, was a real cuddled & loved roast turkey more than anything in the world. I also had a gray cat named Smokey (my neighbors 3 year old named him) who got stuck on our roof & was rescued by the ASPCA and became our cat. That was back in 1983. We have a house rule - there have to be more people than animals at any given time. So we have 4 people & 3 cats.
