Explain why commercial makes fun of "Don't Know Much" (RONSTADT/NEVILLE)

Is it a hokey, un-cool song? The lyrics aren't smarmy or cloying. In the commercial, some dudes are singing it starting at the verse, "Look at this man / so filled with inspiration..." Is it a homophobic joke?

Hadn't heard it in years and don't even notice the product they're advertising.
