My bank somehow "lost" the $600 deposit I made Friday |
|
Went home Friday evening and it was there (of course they held some funds. My dumbass employer gives a paper check, not direct deposit)but I had enough to pay some bills, so I did. Now I'm showing a negative balance and the deposit I made is nowhere to be found. I called them today, but being Sunday there's not a whole lot they can do about it. For once I put my receipt in a place where it was easy to find.
The girl on the phone said there was no indication a deposit had been made, she said maybe the check had something wrong with it (ie. hadn't been signed) But wouldn't there be a note in my account? How can the deposit show up one day and be gone 36 hours later?
I was planning to spend the afternoon with Johnny Depp!

Well, that sucks! I'm sure they'll figure it out, but my God! They had better not charge you for any so-called "overdrafts." Since it was their fault!
I'm so sorry, sweetie...
And Johnny Depp is so cute, too...

 Yeah, that's what I told the woman on the phone, I'm not paying any overdrafts. I guess I'll just have to wait for Public Enemy to come out on DVD...:-(

3. If it was a check they might have "reserved the right" |
|
Not to allow funds to actually post until the next business day, but still shown it in your account. WAMU did that occasionally with paper checks over a certain amount and if their bank computer flagged your account for any reason (too low a balance, re-setting your "direct deposit" or overdraft limits, bank activity that was unusual...) I've put checks in, had them show up as available, then when the check went through processing that night, had the deposit "held" by all but $100 or $200 because the routing number on that check was not from a bank in their particular network. This generally happens when you deposit via the ATM, rather than walk up to a teller and deposit it. The teller will be able to see if there's something that would hold the check or the account when they scan the check and routing number right there, and they can help you release any holds that their computer will put on the check. Keep your slip, then talk to the bank manager first thing the next morning. If the bank's computer put a hold on your check after it had been deposited, the manager can usually release it there before anything hits your account and causes problems.

5. No, it's not just a hold, the funds are gone |
|
There was a hold on them Friday, which I expected, but they always let me have $100 to use. I looked this morning and there's no record that I ever deposited the money. Usually when I look online the bank gives me two balances: how much I have total, and how much is available to use. On Friday I had %584 total with 84 available to use. My "available to use" is now in the negative since I paid some bills on friday and no indication that I deposited anything. You can bet that I'll be there to find out what happened Monday morning...

6. Same thing happened to me once. |
|
When you get this straightened out (and you will, because you have the receipt)the bank should write a letter to each person you wrote bounced checks to, explaining, and those people should take off any fees that resulted. You need to insist they do this. EXPECT IT, because this was their error.

9. How did you deposit it? |
|
Deposits at ATMs post the following business day if they are made after the bank's ATM cut off time.
If you made a teller deposit on Friday, they should be able to find and correct the problem.

11. They got to fix it, and fix it right. |
|
You got the receipt, so it'll be easy enough for them to fix it.
It is possible for the deposit to show up and then to go away... the funds are made initially electronically, but when the check doesn't materialize, they can just as easily take it away, presuming it to be their error in crediting the check in the first place. In your case, they did make an error but the wrong way around.
They need to refund all overdrafts, and they need to advise in writing to all people who received dishonoured payments that they made an error and could any necessary restitution please be made. This is especially important with your credit cards: I work for one, and just one bounced payment is enough to jack up your APR. Furthermore, because it is not the credit card company that made the screw-up, it is possible (and even likely) in this present business climate that if you called them and explained the situation, they may well say "And? We didn't screw up. See your bank, sorry your APR is staying at V.HIGH%" (well hopefully not so blunt as that but that'll be the effective message). So you *must* lean on your bank heavily to get appropriate letters mailed, faxed and emailed in triplicate to all affected parties, and expect them to not only pay their overdraft fees but the fees the other companies have charged you plus the extra interest you were charged. The bank however is very highly unlikely to give you any recompense for your lost time and trouble unless you start lawyering up, and at that stage it gets expensive and they already employ lawyers anyway.

12. Well, luckily I didn't pay my credit card bill yet |
|
But I did pay the water and phone bills. I'm sure it will be cleared up quickly once I produce my receipt, it just makes me nervous. In the 8 years I've banked there I've never had a problem. If my stupid employer had direct deposit I wouldn't have to worry about it.

There are a few credit unions in Lawrence, but I don't qualify for the main one (KU Credit Union).
And yes, thank heaven it is finally settled. The teller put the wrong date on the deposit, backed it out and then forget to re-enter it. But it's there now and they did not charge me any fees, thank heavens!

19. This happened to me twice |
|
Once, the check had fallen to the floor of the drive through area (the janitor later found it!), and another the teller had tried to steal a cash deposit. Both times, I had to go into the bank and spend entire days trying to get my money back. I did, but at first it was so frustrating because they acted like they did not believe me and that there was nothing they could do.
Do not give up.

What is the point of giving you a supposedly up to date web portal and then not having the ability to keep it accurate. I don't count on my banks web posting to be accurate from Friday afternoon until noon on Tuesday.
Glad it did work out for you.
