1. Reminds me of an old Dave Barry column.
A hurricane blew away his porch, leaving only the door frame and door (no walls) in place. His two dogs would go up to the door and wait for Dave to let them 'out' even though they could easily go around.

Now that I think of it, it also reminds me of the LePetomane Throughway toll booth in the middle of the desert in Blazing saddles. ("Somebody's gotta go back and git a shitload o' dimes!")
