What food or drink did you grow up thinking was healthy (or not) but now find the opposite? |
|
In my case, in spite of being 47 I'm still not grown up yet, so this stretches to last week. I just learned that fruit juice is not particularly good for you. This was an ugly shock, as I've been living on fruit juice for years and years. Apparently, the body isn't particularly good at handling fructose, and when you pass a certain threshold (or in Internetese, fresh hold) you just can't take any more. Sooooo so much for that. (I should stress that it's only unhealthy if you only drink fruit juice, like I was doing, and is worse if you're prone to fructose malabsorption, which I may be. Don't throw out your fruit juice on my iffy advice. Rumors that fruit juice leads to spontaneous human combustion are just that.)
And you?

I mean, astronauts drank it! right? right? It turns out they actually didn't. :(
But really upon reflection, how could powdered orange stuff that had only a hint of orange something in it be healthy?
propaganda, marketing, promoting and pasting a NASA logo on it, well, it did sell.
Jeez, I wonder if it did anything to my DNA?

when I was in college, it was almost the only thing I drank. Now realize that I might have had trouble losing weight due to the 1000+ calories a day of Gatorade I was drinking... and that's not even thinking about all that sugar... blech...
But I did get lots of electrolytes!
I once drank almost four liters of Gatorade at a sitting and realize now that I was very close to putting myself in a diabetic coma at the age of 20.
Sooo glad to see that that nasty crap is being taken off the shelves but unfortunately it's just being replaced with it's watered-down equivalent "Vitamin Water".

but when I was in college there was an entire aisle of the supermarket literally dedicated to Gatorade products and now there are only one or two shelves. Seems like the stores have cut way back on the number and variety of Gatorade that they sell. Meanwhile, all that space is being replaced by vitamin waters.

As a kid, it was always "eat your meat". I haven't touched the shit in 20 years and my three daughters are lean, strong, and healthy (eldest is 18) vegetarians.

I heard someone say once that if you want any nutritional value from freshly-squeezed juice at home, you should throw away the juice and eat the pulp.

I missed the flames too - but am amazed that TANG could ignite a flame war. I thought everyone agreed without exception that it is NASTY stuff. My sister and I were kids in the early 70's when we drank it, because we fell for anything related to the space program. But we didn't really like it, lol.

31. Orange juice, yes! And fish. |
|
I thought a glass of OJ every morning was the healthiest thing - until my mom had high blood sugar levels and her doctor chewed her out over drinking a sugar bomb every morning.
And fish, which was supposed to be the healthy alternative to meats, brain food, all that. Now it turns out it's just a glorified filter for every bit of pollution that's in the water source.
