2. Braves have the pitching, though |
|
No doubt, Philly is the dominant force in the NL East. But their pitching is still suspect.
I honestly don't think the Braves will overtake the Phils, but their pitching depth may take them deeper into the season than most people would suspect.

3. getting Halladay would solve alot of those problems. |
|
I keep hearing that Toronto wants J.A. Happ, Kyle Drabek, Lew Marsdon and Michael Taylor. That's a fairly steep price, but not unreasonable.
I've seen Drabek and Taylor in AA. I think both will be solid major leaguers. Happ's having a good year but he's really only a back end of the rotation guy. Marsdon's a dime a dozen catcher.
Unless there's something more that Toronto wants, if I were Rueben Amarro, I'd be on the phone day and nite trying to work this out.

4. If the Phils wrapped up Halladay |
|
They'd be THE team to beat for the next 3-5 years. Dynasty in the making. I'm relieved this deal hasn't happened yet (being a Braves fan!)

5. I think one of the things that may be keeping the Phils at bay |
|
is that his contract expires after next season.
Would the Phils want to add another 15million a year to their payroll over the next 4-5 years for him when he'd be in his mid thirties?
He may only be a very expensive rent a player.

8. Oh, the Braves kicked our asses, 3 in a row |
|
Thank God they're not kicking anyone else's, or we would be in big trouble come Playoff time.

If the Braves can squeek by into the postseason - look out!

9. They've lost the division with that same cushion in 1964 |
|
Back in 64, when I was a tiny girl. Every night my Dad would come back from the road, and I'd ask "did the Phillies win?" and the poor guy would have to say "No, they lost again".
They went from having a 6.5 game cushion with 12 games left to not making the playoffs.
Good training in How to Be a Phillies Fan (well, until recently)

16. They've been playing well, no question |
|
but the season ain't over yet. There have been grand runs at the last minute (Rockies a few years ago and Houston a few years before that -- both were counted out at this point in the season, both played in the WS). And grand collapses, too. We aren't going to name names there, though.
:eyes:
But that's the fun of it. Waiting and watching with bated breath to see how it all turns out.
God, I love baseball.
