2. What kind of political theory?
Or is it an overview sort of course covering the entire field topically?

3. an intro course
Edited on Wed Jul-22-09 02:16 PM by Ava
the description from the school:
"Introduces students to some outstanding theories of politics. The theories treated offer alternative conceptions of political life, and they are examined from both theoretical and historical perspectives. Among the theorists included are Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Rousseau, Mill, and Marx."

i'm planning to take socialist theory later. i want to take political theory first. :)

It's NEW YORK CITY!!! I'd live in a box under a dumpster outside a day car center and still be thrilled!

Enjoy it all, you! :hi:

35. NYU actually has a great off campus housing registry for students
there's some apartments that can be shared between two for a decent price.

thinking about what I really wanted to get out of the next few years and what pasts I could put behind me. It was a good buffer. But I know what you mean.

23. They require you to live in a dorm for a semester or something?
Edited on Wed Jul-22-09 05:54 PM by BreweryYardRat
I looked at the NYU housing prices. Then I looked at shared apartment prices on Craigslist.

Even in New York, an apartment is apparently cheaper than a dorm room.

28. Mm. Even so, see if there's any way the housing scholarship will cover an apartment instead.
Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 02:29 AM by BreweryYardRat
If it does, go for the apartment. Find one with a washer (Especially if they'll give you a refund for the difference between the cost of a room in an apartment and the cost of a dorm room.) You'll be happier having your own place...no RAs, your own washer/dryer, your own dishwasher, being informed about inspections and fire-alarm tests, etc...

Of course, if the school won't cover an off-campus apartment with the scholarship, and won't give you a refund, save your money, but go for the apartment if you can. Even if you have to live in one of those apartment complexes geared to students. Even if you're stuck in one of those with random roommates. The improvement in quality of life is AMAZING.

"are you studying at NYU now?"

It'd be nice, but no. I'm currently an upperclassman in the Florida state university system. Maybe for grad school or something, if I can find the money and think it'll be cost-effective. I've always wanted to spend a few years in New York.
***

And while we're talking college, here are a few more words of wisdom from someone who really wishes he'd gotten similar advice rather than having to learn the hard way:

1. Get a complete physical from a good doctor, get vaccinated for everything you can (especially viral meningitis), and get a good psychiatrist to check over your mental health. Especially since some mental disorders either develop for the first time or start getting worse around 18-22.

2. Always look for used textbooks online before buying from the college bookstore, because even the used books at the college bookstore are often grossly overpriced. Search Amazon, Barnes and noble, Borders, ABE Books, etc...

3. TAKE SUMMER CLASSES. One per summer semester. That way you don't have to take as many credit hours during the rest of the year...and upper-level classes don't require such long papers in summer.

31. it doesn't
as an upperclassman i'll likely start looking into apartments to share with a roommated, but i'm ok with living in campus housing my first year. as someone who has never lived in new york or any large city i think it will actually be food for me.

i'm lucky i'm not stuck with a random roommate. my roommate and i applied with each other for housing and for one of NYU's explorations floor. we're happy with where we were placed. :)

29. I'm very jealous...
I was looking at NYU or Georgetown when I considered transferring. Unfortunately, I cannot afford tuition and I would not get a big enough scholarship to cover any large chunk of the bills.

Enjoy NYC. I loved it when I visited a few years ago.

Best of luck in your first year. It will be the strangest, most eye opening year of your life. At least it was for me.
