Any "Mister Roberts" fans here?

I've seen it about 3 times and just watched it again from Netflix. I was disappointed that Warners didn't put a "making of" documentary on the DVD. There is some rare footage of Fonda, Cagney and Lemmon from Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town, however.

Has anyone seen the play? Fonda and director John Ford supposedly clashed because Ford put in too much "slapstick" humor. Jack Lemmon was the only one of the cast even nominated for an Academy Award, but Cagney put in a brilliant performance too. Too bad he was overlooked.

3. I'm not certain,
but I would suppose that one ranks up there, along with Lemmon tossing it overboard at the end.

6. Powell's Doc is one of the best.
He is another overlooked classic film actor who was good in just about everything he did, but never won any awards. I like it when he tells one of the guys in sick bay to tell him how the bells in his ears are ringing: "Is it ding dong, dong ding, or ding ding? Think about it, it's important." When the fellow says "Dong ding," Doc says, "too bad, it was dong dong," and sends him off with some aspirin!

10. TV Guide used to call 'Ensign Pulver' a 'disappointing sequel'
But I'd seen "Ensign Pulver" three or four times before I saw "Mister Roberts" and always enjoyed it. In fact, I still occasionally say "byoo-tocks." :D

8. Great Movie. The play is available on DVD also
1984 production done live for television starring Robert Hays, Kevin Bacon, and Charles Durning among others.

It puts back some of the more saucy dialog from the play that was too much for 59's movie audiences but about right for 80's TV. :-)

Doesn't Howard "Dr. Johnny Fever" Hessman play Doc in that one?

14. I CRY like a baby when they read the letter of Roberts' death. If you haven't read the novel, do so
It's a quick, easy, read, but explains why Doug has a hard time getting that transfer.

19. Fonda loved that story and wanted it respected.
When he was awarded the Medal of Freedom, midshipmen from Annapolis were part of the ceremony and saluted him with "Thank you, Mr Roberts". He had tears on his face.
