Is there a way to ignore "friends" on Facebook while keeping them on your friend list?
Say I wanted to keep somebody on my friend list, but not see anything he/she posted to my Wall (sort of like the "ignore" feature here at DU). Is it possible to do such a thing?

1. Whats the point of keeping them friends then?
I mean you can hide individual posts, but if you want to hide everything they say?

2. We're both in the same line of work...
...and I figure it couldn't hurt to keep him as a contact if I'm ever job hunting in the future.

5. Yes. Click the drop down to the right of any of their posts,
then click Hide (whomever). They aren't notified, but their posts won't be seen. If they're using an application, and its postings are what you click on, you can hide all posts from that application.

I have a lot of 'friends' on Facebook who post incessantly. I just hide them.

You can look their posts up any time, using an option at the bottom of the page to "Show hidden posts."

incesant and inane posting from friends that I dearly love.

15. Yah. My favorite nephew is involved in all sorts of gaming
apps on Facebook, so being able to hide the auto postings by the applications is huge. I don't want to miss his personal posts, but I don't really care about what's going on with the "Mafia" or whatever that is.

Another guy, who is a contact of my wife, and a casual acquaintance, posts so many times during the day that he was bumping posts I wanted to see off the first page. Hiding him fixed that, and I asked my wife to tell me if he posted anything I should see. So far, she hasn't mentioned anything.

16. Yeah, just checked and you can hide either all posts by the person
or just the game, like "Mafia Wars."

Unfortunately, even with my relatively small group of friends, at least 10 new quizzes or games come up every day. For some reason those really annoy me. Especially because if you play them some unknown entity then has access to all your info- and I think maybe your friends' info too?!? If there's no way around that, I really should quit Facebook. The privacy issues are a concern.

17. Yeah, that's a problem, or can be. I just hide any that pop up,
and they've shown up less often, lately. It's the Facebook way, I guess, but at least they give you a control over it.

I find the interaction with old and distant friends, along with family, very useful. I can take the time to control what I see, so it's not that big a deal. I absolutely never use applications, myself, just for the privacy issue you mention. I wouldn't subject anyone to that.

18. But it really does look like any time anyone on your list
takes a quiz or plays a game, they are opening up YOUR personal information.

I've mentioned this several times in several places, and hardly anybody seems to give a crap about it.

19. You can adjust what information goes to applications
under the Settings tab. You can't turn off everything, but you can limit it to just your name, networks, and friends. You can also block individual applications completely, so they don't get anything, but you have to do that one at a time.

It's all part of FB's business model, I guess. I don't care, really. I just turned off everything but name, network, and friends. Actually, I think that's the default.

8. You mean the one that says "Remove"?
I don't see anything else that could be described as "drop down".

14. No. On your home page, if you move the mouse over the
message posted by your "friend" you'll see the word Hide to the right of the message. Drop down the list. You can hide your "friend's" posts or whatever moronic application was used to create the post.

Has to be your Home page, though.

9. On the very upper right hand margin of their post is an invisible button.
It says "Hide" when you mouse over it. Click on that and it will say "Hide all posts from X". That's it. Once you click on it, all their postings poof away like magic.

12. Make sure you are on the page that is "Home" for your FB
and not on your "Profile" page or some other page.

11. Click on "Home" & look for their last status update on that page
(it's the page with all your friends' status updates) and then move your cursor way to the right of their name and the word "Hide" becomes visible. Click that.
