Alabama Beverage Control board deems Wine Label Pornographic
An art poster from 1895 has been deemed pornographic by the Alabama Beverage Control Board, forcing distributors to remove a wine bearing its image from stores across the state.

The offending label carries a reproduction of an art poster done in 1895 by an unknown Parisian artist introducing the Cycles Gladiator bicycle. The poster depicts a nude woman with flowing red hair essentially flying through space with a bicycle.

The side of her breasts and buttocks are visible in the impressionistic image, but there is no depiction of genitalia. Still, the ban on the wine was apparently prompted by a complaint to the ABC.

“Somebody complained to the ABC, and they found there was improper brand registration,” said MBC’s on-premise sales manager for Mobile, Drew Flanigan. “It’s actually a piece of art. I’ve seen the print for sale in some furniture stores.”

3. Originals go for 50 grand.
From the article:
As for the label art, he pointed out that it is, “one of the most sought-after pieces of art in the world.” Leigon said original lithographs of the Cycles Gladiator image go for up to $50,000 apiece, putting them on par with pieces done by famed Parisian lithographer Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

2. IIRC, this poster is quite famous
because it was one of the first to use two tone printing or something of that nature.

So, they thinking an icon of the printing industry is somehow pornographic. Sheesh. :eyes:

Print, video, film, photography, internet, etc... if it weren't for porn, we might still be carving stick figures on cave walls. :)

4. These idiots don't even know what "pornographic" means
Is it depicting aroused genitalia or a sex act? No? Then it isn't pornographic. Dumbasses.

15. LOL...thanks, man.
I'm in SW Florida. This state does some pretty stupid shit as well. I need a moniker for FL that works like that.

Haven't heard of any wine labels being banned though.

All I can come up with is a motto;

"Florida. We gave the world G.W. Bush. No wonder we look like a dick."

'Banned in Bama': State ban of wine with nude label a marketing boon

By PHILLIP RAWLS Associated Press Writer
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's ban on a wine that features a nude nymph on the label became a business opportunity for a California vintner who is preparing a marketing campaign to capitalize on being "Banned in Bama."

The Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board recently told stores and restaurants to quit serving Cycles Gladiator wine because of the label. Board attorney Bob Martin said the stylized, art-nouveau rendition of a nude female with a flying bicycle violated Alabama rules against displaying "a person posed in an immoral or sensuous manner."

Bill Leigon, president of Hahn Family Wines in Soledad, Calif., said Thursday that visits to the company's Web site have increased tenfold since news of the ban broke late last week, and callers from across the country have been asking where they can buy the wine.

Because of the interest, he's developing store displays that say "Banned in Bama" and "Taste What They Can't Have in Alabama."

Hahn said he will never miss the 500 cases sold annually in Alabama. "There is going to be a significant increase in our sales," he predicted.

Rosanna Guardagno, a social psychologist at the University of Alabama, said a ban often increases people's interest in a product.
