It does get boring in the cockpit.

If you don't know me, I was an airline pilot for about 35 years.
And yes, on long transatlantic flights, it does get boring as hell.
The autopilot's on and you're just sitting there, monitoring a few instruments, and riding.

Many times I'd take a book to read.
Sometimes we'd play gin or mah jong.
And there were some AM radio stations we could tune in along the way.

But once in a while we'd just mess with the passengers.

"This is Captain MacPherson welcoming you aboard East Scottish Airways. You'll have had your tea. Our destination is Glasgow. There is no need to panic."



"There's a bomb on board this plane, and I'll tell you where it is for a thousand pounds."

"I don't believe you."

"If you don't tell me where the bomb is... if I don't give you the money... unless you give me the bomb..."

"The money."

"The money; thank you, pretty lady... the bomb will explode killing everybody."

"Including you."

(pause)

"I'll tell you where it is for a pound."



"How to Irritate People," btw, is pre-Python. It was written by Cleese and Graham Chapman, with assistance from Tim Brooke-Taylor and Marty Feldman, with whom Cleese and Chapman had written and acted in "At Last, the 1948 Show" shortly before. The "Silly Job Interview" bit was re-done in "Monty Python's Flying Circus" and the bit at the car repair shop (based on a real-life incident of Chapman's) is the basis for the "Dead Parrot" sketch.

Yeah, I have it on VHS. :D
