1. I LOVE Ani...
...live. Her studio stuff, not as much. As for Bjork... I'm with ya.

3. well, who do you like?
Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 11:26 PM by tigereye

Ani grew on me over the years - I used to find her guitar style kind of tedious and repetitive but she's not a bad lyricist. Bjork is on a whole different creative planet. Hell, she's married to Matthew Barney, for god's sake - that's even more out there.

5. Mathew Barney is the biggest blot against Bjork
Anyone see his bullshit "Cremaster Cycle?" Horrible.

7. have only seen parts of it - but he's a very challenging artist
I can't say I like what he does, but he's better than Jeff Koons - not that that's saying much. :D

8. I happened to be in New York when the Guggenheim featured him
He worked a lot in yellowish, faux-biological resins and was very interested in imagery pertaining to sexual stereotypes.

However, that brief synopsis makes the final product sound a lot more interesting than it really was.

But if he makes Bjork happy, I guess I can't complain!

12. He's not very subtle in his imagery, that's for sure
At one point, a video-format section of the exhibit featured a woman made up to look like a cat, cavorting near a man who wielded a hammer. Not sure what Barney might have been driving at, there...

17. I think a lot of his images are pretty dream-like and probably not that
rational, from the little I have seen and read.

21. For me, the problem was that the dream-imagery just wasn't interesting
It's been a few years since I saw it, but IIRC his psycho-sexual imagery was drably pedestrian.

However, I admit that part of my annoyance stems from the fact that his exhibit took up just about the whole museum, so that anyone who didn't like what he had to offer on the first floor would be totally sick of it by the time they reached the top level!

23. I'm a huge Cremaster Cycle fan, and have posted the trailer here.
I don't care for his sculpture, however.

For what it's worth. I like a lot of female artists, too.

Ani does indeed have some good lyrics, though - "Self-Evident" nailed it.
