I bought one of those special bags for keeping produce fresh |
|
and put a bunch of bananas in it to see if I could keep them from going brown. You don't seal the bags up, you put the produce in and leave the open end loosely folded over.
My husband was in the kitchen for a total of 10 minutes unsupervised today. Naturally the first thing he did was rip a giant hole down the full length of the bag to get at the bananas.

I'm sorry that happened, but it's still funny :)
Maybe in the future it would help to put labels on things?

5. That would probably work best |
|
if I put the label right on the kitchen door.

At first glance I thought you were advising me to buy a replacement husband - not a bad suggestion, but I couldn't figure out why he needed to be extra large. :D

8. For a packet of them bags, yes. There's 40 bags in the packet IIRC. |
|
At least the one I did had that many, and no I didn't buy it from the TV, I bought it at Bed Bath and Beyond (weird name, cos they don't sell beds, or baths, and I have never seen a beyond before).
IMO the bags are a bunch of rubbish. We buy shredded lettuce and it goes brown after maybe 2 days, 3 at best. We don't use much, generally on sandwiches. I thought if these bags were any good then maybe the lettuce would last longer, after all the TV adverts show a head of lettuce remaining crisp (apparently). Well, still after 2 days the shredded lettuce would go brown. We changed to a hydroponic lettuce instead, cos it's still growing (apparently) and it does stay fresh much much longer... well over a week for sure.

10. The difference is between shredded and still as a head of lettuce. |
|
I'm not sure why, but perhaps it's because the whole head is "more alive" than the shredded kind. Plus, any kind of cutting or shredding is going to bruise the leaves, making them break down that much faster.
I can keep certain kinds of lettuce in my fridge for a couple of weeks if I only pull off those leaves I need and leave the rest of the head alone. And that's just wrapped up in a regular produce bag.

"Bloodbath and Beyond."
Buying shredded lettuce is a no-no around here. Those cut edges are susceptible to browning almost overnight. What's odd, though, is that I buy cabbage already shredded for cole slaw and Chinese cooking, and it's packed so well, it never browns. Go figure.
Hydroponic is nice, and without those cut edges, you have sandwich lettuce all the time. That's a GREAT solution...................

18. My husband bought them for his bananas but he does not like the way they work |
|
The bananas look OK but the flesh got all mealy. He threw most of a bunch out because that happened in less time than the bananas would have gotten over ripe.

11. I think it was closer to 5 or 6 |

I don't know if it's worth trying to patch it up with packing tape. It's all stretched out from being ripped.
I didn't even have it long enough to figure out if they actually work.

13. Bananas have an optimum eating window |
|
of about 8 hours. I buy them green and can't even peel them for days. Even if you do manage to peel one, you wind up with bitter banana face. Then one day, usually while I'm at work, they decide to turn to mush all at once and I wind up eating my bananas with a spoon.
