Any advice on researching a murder that happened back in the 60s?
I am on the East Coast and the murder occurred in Nevada. My uncle was the one murdered. There was quiet talk in the family that it was a mob hit. I was very young, and I still remember my dad talking about it.

Any tips on researching his murder?

4. Most research projects begin at the library
Sure, you might have to leave your house but it'll be a lot more efficient than relying on the jackoffs who post here.

9. Do some research on him as well
both within and outside the family.

I'm not saying he was involved with the mob himself, but, in any case, that may influence what you do.

Be careful.

12. the standard advice given here already applies, but also think of this
as others say get the birth certificate, look at what's in the library, look at the mob history etc.

however, let me ask you something else -- what is the purpose of this research?

as a result of a death bed confession and a check of the records, a friend learned that his granddad poisoned his grandmother and that his father as a small boy was aware of the murder and felt lifelong guilt for not speaking up -- was there anything positive that my friend gained from this knowledge?

14. The only purpose would be to find out whatever happened
Curiosity, I guess.

I still haven't decided if I even want to pursue it or not.

Just wanted a place to start.

13. check with the paper in the area
if they covered it at all, the stories should be in their archives or, at the very least, you can find out when the stories were published and you might be able to find them on microfilm.

i also second getting the police files as well as contacting the local da and seeing if they have any files on it.

15. A friend of mine has always been wanting to look into an incident from the 70's.
A guy in her hometown was shot and killed by the police after he supposedly robbed a restaurant. There was an internal investigation and no wrong doing was found on the part of the cop who shot him. But to my friend things never quite felt right with that case. It would be nice to reopen an investigation on it but I would think that would be damn near impossible.
