3. Birch Lake in north eastern Minnesota

It is a 20 mile long lake that is surrounded by 90% federal and state forest. It is just at the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe area. The scenery was gorgeous, the mosquitos were relentless, we lived through four thunderstorms, and the fishing was a major disappointment.

It was like being in an isolated RV with no other living souls in sight.

I went on one in California once when I was a kid - it was only for an afternoon but it made it go on the list of things to do one day. Lake Powell maybe.

4. We did

My wife, daughter and I learned how to work as a team. Once our daughter realized that we were truly on our own and there were no yard lights off in the distance at night she understood how important it was to work as a team. Tying up a 36 foot boat in a storm is no easy task. We had to do it a few times.
