Been listening to any music this weekend?
I have:

Michael Jackson - Bad (one of his best)

Michelle Branch single "Sooner Or Later" (this is more like The Spirit Room than song "This Way" is - I really like both songs, but "Sooner Or Later" more. Release date for the album is rumored to be Nov. 10 - would make a great Christmas gift for me!)

Songs from Ashley Tisdale's Guilty Pleasure (my impression hasn't changed - underwhelming vocals but hard to resist songs. The vocals put it into "maybe not buy" territory.)

Ingrid Michaelson single "Maybe" (good song; I've liked her, but not to the level of singer/songwriters like A Fine Frenzy, Regina Spektor, Michelle Branch, and Anna Nalick. That could change with the upcoming CD. I don't post my crush list after every addition/subtraction, but I'll say I put Ingrid back in my crush list; she'll be an honorable mention at least.)

Caitlin Crosby - Flawz (definitely one of the overlooked gems from 2009!)

1. well, saw some cool blues at our local blues festival
Edited on Sat Jul-25-09 10:29 PM by tigereye

Aaron Neville and Tribe 13 - wonderful NO funk, blues, soul - delightful and great to dance to.

Shannon Curfman - you would probably like her, MVD- young woman who can really belt, and plays searing guitar leads - kind of Southern boogie- blues by way of Clapton, if that makes sense. Discovered at age 14- now 23.

Ron Yarosz and Vehicle - really nice East Coast? bar-style with old organ, harp guitar blues- good singer.

Missed Los Lobos - had seen them before - we went to see the new HP film instead

Tomorrow is Robert Cray as the headliner, also Deb Callahan. Nice to see some women blues artists, who are sometimes in short supply at these things.

Also listened to some old punk tunes, some Dead, The Pipettes (cheap CD bought on a whim - Brit girls with a Supremes-type sound and rather inane lyrics), and some Neko Case. (she will also be here next week)

ps our local alt station loves Michaelson.

3. I really can't complain, we've had a nice and not too hot summer here so far
just wish I could get to the beach - it's been a while. My son is taking a rowing class, so that's been kind of cool, and the pool is open, so that helps a lot.

:hi: How is your summer so far?

4. It's been good - I went to the Philly Zoo for the first time
I enjoyed it. I hope to go away somewhere this summer if time permits; not sure where. It has been cool but we have a warm period coming up - not as bad as it could be, though!

My cousin is also going to build me a new computer, and I'm excited about that. I got tired of the store-bought ones.

9. Our local cable just went all-digital
The only real reason I have cable is for sports. So when there's nothing worth watching (which is often) I tend to bounce around the MusicChoice channels (mostly Jazz and Blues). I'm very impressed with their playlist. Etta James is playing right now.

on Friday night along with a few minutes of Leah Tysse (check her out, great blues artist). Saw Mick mrtin and the Blue Rockers yesterday (local blues guy) and then Kenny Neal last night after Mick.

Gonna be watching Carolyn Wonderland and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings tonight on PBS Austin City Limits. Really, these two, along with Grace Potter are the rising stars of the blues thing. be sure to check this out.

14. I was underwhelmed with Sooner Or Later
It wasn't bad but it wasn't great. I'll still give her CD a try when it comes out.

I was listening to The Saturdays on youtube yesterday. I really like their song "Up.

I've really been into this Lady Gaga song that leaked. She actually wrote it for someone else but her demo version somehow got online. It's different than her current songs.

15. The song still has that country twang, but I loved it
Edited on Sun Jul-26-09 08:25 PM by mvd
I like about everything Michelle has done. Do you want a complete return to the rock sound? I'm not sure she will do that; she's exploring her own mix of country and pop. I do agree on the Saturdays song, though. That song is kind of manufactured, but good bubblegum.

16. I do prefer the pop/rock sound a lot more
I don't expect her to move away from the country path. Michelle seems to prefer it now. I usually prefer "manufactured" pop/country like Carrie Underwood "Before He Cheats." The most country song I have is this Kellie Pickler song "The Best Days of Your Life." I hate that I like the song because I really, really, didn't like her on American Idol. I also really, really don't like Taylor Swift who co-wrote the song. I'm not too into country but I enjoyed Michelle's previous CDs so much that I'll at least give it a listen.

17. I like Carrie; she's pretty good for mainstream country
I like Taylor, too. But I also like alt country and country-rock; Michelle is forging a path of her own I'm anxious to hear. Glad you will give the album a chance. :hi:

All the songs are incredible, but the following are personal favorites.

Greensleeves - terrific rendition
All Souls Night - haunting, will turn anyone Celtic
