In Norse mythology, Sol rode through the sky on her chariot, pulled by two horses. Sól also was called Sunna, from which are derived the words, sun and Sunday.

Male energy is often thought of as more forceful, more fiery, more direct (symbolized by the line or the sword sword) like the sun's energy, and female energy is often though of as more ruminative, peaceful, and introspective (symbolized by the circle or the bowl or the chalice), like the coolness of the moon. There's much more to it, but that's the simplest explanation.

Helios, Selene.

In other Germanic languages, such as German and Icelandic, the Sun in feminine and the Moon is masculine. But English lost grammatical gender and so became influenced by Graeco-Roman mythology when it came to personification of the Sun and Moon.
