Why are sheep such wimps when being herded by herding dogs?
Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 11:05 AM by brentspeak
After all these millenia of sheep being herded around by dogs who boss them around with "the eye" and a few menacing barks, you'd think that at least one of them would finally be the Joan of Ark/William Wallace/etc. of sheep and say, "Guys, guys - there's a bunch of us and only one of him. Five against one! Let's stop being people and let's start being sheep!"

4. The sheep who strike out on their own tend to be culled.
Obeying the herding dog has survival value. Today's sheep are the offspring of many. many generations of successfully herded animals.

5. It's probably something like Stockholm Syndrome
The dog is, after all, a natural predator.

12. where'd you get that picture of my dog Duffy?
Gee!

As to your question, it's the evil eye. Border collies possess the ability to terrify just with that look. Duffy has our cats totally in awe.

Hey have you seen that you tube of the UK border collies who herded a flock of LED-lighted sheep into figures, at night? It's pretty cool.

13. Not always
At the Alexandria Scottish Games, long, long ago, I saw a sheep charge the dog. They're evolving. One day we'll see sheep herding border collies.
