3. Sometimes inhaling the liquid was |

a trip unto itself. I worked with the regular black mimeograph, and the purple ditto machine. Yikes--it seems like yesterday, when it's actually been about 30 something years.

7. Actually, that's not a Mimeograph... |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 10:09 PM by targetpractice
That's a "ditto machine" or Spirit duplicator which uses an alcohol based solvent to transfer images from the wax-based ditto master. The "duplicator fluid" solvent is responsible for the smell we all remember.
Mimeographs were invented by Thomas Edison and used traditional ink and stencil transfers.
Ditto machines were often called mimeographs much like all brands of tissue are often called kleenexes. ;-)

10. I never used one myself, but... |

My former employer has a showcase of them in the lobby of their corporate headquarters. www.mimeo.com
I used ditto machines quite often as I was the teacher's pet. ;-)

17. Cutting the stencil - |
|
I did so many of those, and if you made an error, you had this plastic-type stuff in a bottle with a brush that you put on the error, waited for it to try, and then typed the correction.
What a pain in the ass that was, but it was the only way.
People today have no idea how hard we had to work, all those years ago.........................
