1. 4-6 weeks if they're expedient and you have all the needed documentation. |

it shouldn't take long, maybe a bit longer if you've never had one before
they were having long delays a couple years ago but it seems to be all fixed now

7. I agree. I had a bad problem, having come home from northern Italy w/o my original |
|
passport (my wallet was stolen in Turin). It was the least of my trauma. I got my new passport w/i 3 weeks. They've got people working on it. This was last summer.

9. Delays due to the new passport having those microchips. |
|
UK Embassy is having those difficulties right now, and they're delayed about 6-8 weeks.

8. 2 business days if you pay megabucks or go to DC yourself. |
|
If you go the usual route and non expedited, 4 weeks is about the norm. My wife did a mail renewal of hers and she was turned around in about 2 weeks. My son was about a week and a bit longer, because we had to go to a Post Office to do it for him (even a renewal) because we needed to be in front of some government official apparently.
They also send you your old passports back - primarily just in case you have any visas that haven't expired from another country... but we're on visa-free travel anyway, so just a bookfull of stamps and memories.
