Fan recommendation? I know absolutely NOTHING about them - I live in Seattle.

This one looks ok - thoughts?

Get one with lots of power.

Might get two, use one for a window fan.

Living in Texas we are used to heat, hope it cools down for y'all soon.

7. it doesn't need to be fancy...just something to pull the cooler evening/night air in
is all you need. I still use a heavy, metal, window fan that my parents used in Ohio in the 1950s. Too bad that most fans built today won't be around 60 years from now!

23. It doesn't have to fill up the whole window...just put it on the windowsill and
suck the cooler air in to the room (or rooms). Go buy a fan or two (it won't break you) and try it for a few nights. Then add more as you see fit.

35. the screen stays on...
the box fan should sit on the windowsill, inside the screen...close the window down on top of the fan(or slide it to the side, if that's how the window works- if you have casement windows, that sucks). once you close the window on the fanif there's still an open space on the side- try to fill it with a pillow or some cardboard- the more the opening around the fan is sealed, the more efficiently it will operate.

Edited on Tue Jul-28-09 11:37 PM by dysfunctional press
and open a window on the opposite side of the house/apartment(preferebly the shady side) so that the air gets sucked in and through the home.
also- if the fan doesn't fit tight in the windowuse a pillow or something to fill the open space on the side- the fan will work more efficiently.

I use them daily/nightly during half the year, and they are still going strong. I'm shocked at how long they have lasted.

BUT, the more important feature is that they have remote controls, which I have found to be completely indispensible, especially in the middle of the night.

15. I prefer box fans or high velocity ones
Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-Premium-Box-Fan-3-SPEED/dp/B000HHJ2I2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1248831692&sr=1-1
Or if it will not fit in your window: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HW-628-Enviracaire-Twin-Window/dp/B0000CGQYA/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1248831692&sr=1-10

With those, at night put it in a window and let it pull in the outside air if it is cooler. The best strategy if you have double hung windows is to open the upper part on the downwind side of the house and put the fan in the lower part on the other side. Pull in the cooler air and push out the hotter.

If you just want to move the air: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HT800-Super-Turbo-Performance/dp/B0000BYDUC/ref=pd_bxgy_k_img_b
Or: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HFT114B-Oscillating-Super-Turbo-High-Performance/dp/B00018CXSI/ref=pd_sim_hg_2

The fans on stands will not help lift the cooler air closer to the floor and move it around the room. The little high velocity ones can be angled to do that.

25. 88 degrees IN the house on the other side of the Cascades!
This house suuuuucks when it's hot. Dark brown that bakes in the afternoon sun - as well as the sun baking the kitchen through the windows. Evening comes and it's downright pleasant outside, but the house holds the heat all night. I've got practically zip for windows, and no airflow. If it weren't for fans in times like this I'd just die.

88 degrees IN the house? Seriously? It's far nicer than that outside right now. x(

I'm not complaining too loudly, however. I'm SO tired of being cold. I hate the cold, and like the heat!

38. just remember fans only make you FEEL cooler
and they are actually a motor running and generating heat - turn them off when you are not in the room!

(unless you are using one to draw or exhaust air from in/out of the building, which is a different process - make sure the outside air is actually cooler)

They also feel better if it is a little humid -

39. My wife and I bought two 24" fans at Walgreen's five years ago.
We get them out every May, and put them back in storage every September. Between those two dates, they run almost constantly, as if we were in Texas instead of Washington State. (If we were in Texas, we'd have air conditioning...)

They cost ten bucks apiece. Great investment...

45. Yeah I have heard these fairy tales as well. It doesn't get hot here
Then they have two weeks of 100 degree plus temperatures and wonder while everyone is dropping like flies.

Look if you build a house put in central air and heat. If it doesn't get hot that summer don't run it.

And if you think the Northeast and Northwest US are bad, The Europeans take the cake.

When I traveled there in the seventies and Eighties even some of the Hotels didn't have air.

And it gets hot in Europe... real Hot.

42. I don't care for those pole mounted jobs
they always fall over and are hard to move around. Also every oscillating fan I have ever had eventually developed the most irritating squeak - worse than a cricket in the bedroom if you sleep with a fan on. I have a bunch of plastic "box" type fans - cheapo 20 inchers I got from Ace hardware that I can set on a table or tilt up from the floor (where the cooler air actually is) similar to this that somebody else posted:

I live in southeastern arizona in an old ranch house that has never had air conditioning. It regularly gets in the 100's during the day in summer here. We stay damp and do the desert adapted siesta in the afternoon.

If it is humid where you are a fan will feel quite abit cooler than "reality" - you may not need to dampen sheets and so forth - you can put ice in front of a fan, but that is pretty wastefull in terms of energy use (and if you make your freezer work harder it may make your house hotter, heh)

or a towel under your feet, fan at the foot of bed

wet sheets (or burlap) in the window are how swamp coolers were invented - they are common in the drier desert, but don't work very well when it gets humid

Does the restaurant Boomer's Landing still do business in Anacortes?

I was on Whidbey in April, and for the first time I walked under the Deception Pass bridge. Amongst the dirth of grafitti, I found the most interesting poem:

As the Great Ship grew
In stature and hue
In another world
A great iceberg grew too

I caught a 42 lb King about a mile from the bridge... one of the highlights of my life... it took a half-hour before I got it near the boat, and another half-hour to net it.

Peace.

52. We have two fans
I'm here in Federal Way, we have no AC, so when we decided to get a portable AC unit it was too late everyone is sold out. Talk about stimulating the economy! So far it has gotten to be 88 in our house. When we got to bed we put a fan next to the open window and when it gets cooler it feels better, but I have been getting up very early, 2-3 am so I can open the door and suck more cool air in. It was 84 when I got up, 3am, and now at 6 am it is 82 in here, but the fan feels much cooler now. I'm sleeping during the day, but this weather is just plain miserable, and I am not one that complained about the rain or the 2 weeks of snow. I loved it and hope it returns this winter. Two more days fellow Puget Sounders! Hopefully this is the last heat wave. My vampire side is anxious for the long nights to return (o;

I have to say we got lucky this summer because last spring we were living in a 44 year old metal trailer, and it had AC, and even running it day and night it got to 90 once, so I'm pretty sure my partner and I would have had to round up our 3 cats and rent a pet friendly hotel room if we were still in that trailer; I'm sure it would have matched the outside temp. This trailer is better insulated and so we don't freeze on the winter anymore, and last summer it stayed in the low-mid 70's, very nice for our normal temps.

I hope you all are staying cool where ever you are.

Tam
