Favourite Truckin' Songs. Old and new. Post 'em if you've got 'em

Wolf Creek Pass
by C W McCall

Me an' Earl was haulin' chickens on a flatbed out of Wiggins, and we'd spent all night on the uphill side of thirty-seven miles of hell called Wolf Creek Pass. Which is up on the Great Divide.

We was settin' there suckin' toothpicks, drinkin' Nehi and onion soup mix, and I said, "Earl, let's mail a card to Mother then send them chickens on down the other side. Yeah, let's give 'em a ride."

Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin' on down the other side

Well, Earl put down his bottle, mashed his foot down on the throttle, and then a couple'a boobs with a thousand cubes in a nineteen-forty-eight Peterbilt screamed to life. We woke up the chickens.

Well, we roared up offa that shoulder sprayin' pine cones, rocks, and boulders, and put four hundred head of them Rhode Island reds and a couple a' burnt-out roosters on the line. Look out below; 'cause here we go!

Well, we commenced to truckin' and them hens commenced to cluckin' and then Earl took out a match and scratched his pants and lit up the unused half of a dollar cigar and took a puff. Says "My, ain't this purdy up here."

I says, "Earl, this hill can spill us. You better slow down or you gonna kill us. Just make one mistake and it's the Pearly Gates for them eight-five crates a' USDA-approved cluckers. You wanna hit second?"

Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
Truckin' on down the other side

Well, Earl grabbed on the shifter and he stabbed her into fifth gear and then the chromium-plated, fully-illuminated genuine accessory shift knob come right off in his hand. I says, "You wanna screw that thing back on, Earl?"

He was tryin' to thread it on there when the fire fell off a' his cigar and dropped on down, sorta rolled around, and then lit in the cuff of Earl's pants and burned a hole in his sock. Yeah, sorta set him right on fire.

I looked on outta the window and I started countin' phone poles, goin' by at the rate of four to the seventh power. Well I put two and two together, and added twelve and carried five; come up with twenty-two thousand telephone poles an hour.

I looked at Earl and his eyes was wide, his lip was curled, and his leg was fried. And his hand was froze to the wheel like a tongue to a sled in the middle of a blizzard. I says, "Earl, I'm not the type to complain; but the time has come for me to explain that if you don't apply some brake real soon, they're gonna have to pick us up with a stick and a spoon."

Well, Earl rared back, and cocked his leg, stepped as down as hard as he could on the brake, and the pedal went clear to the floor and stayed there, right there on the floor. He said it was sorta like steppin' on a plum.

Well, from there on down it just wasn't real purdy: it was hairpin county and switchback city. One of 'em looked like a can full'a worms; another one looked like malaria germs. Right in the middle of the whole damn show was a real nice tunnel, now wouldn't you know?

Sign says clearance to the twelve-foot line, but the chickens was stacked to thirteen-nine. Well we shot that tunnel at a hundred-and-ten, like gas through a funnel and eggs through a hen, and we took that top row of chickens off slicker than scum off a Lousiana swamp. Went down and around and around and down 'til we run outta ground at the edge of town. Bashed into the side of the feed store... in downtown Pagosa Springs.

1. Big Joe & the Phantom 309
Phantom 309

by Red Sovine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EAZlArfDOw

Well you see I happened to be back on the east coast
A few years back tryin to make me a buck
Like everybody else, well you know
Times get hard and well I got down on my luck
And I got tired of just roamin and bummin
Around, so I started thumbin my way
Back to my old hometown
You know I made quite a few miles
In the first couple of days, and i
Figured Id be home in a week if my
Luck held out this way
But you know it was the third night
I got stranded, it was out at a cold lonely
Crossroads, and as the rain came
Pouring down, I was hungry, tired
Freezin, caught myself a chill, but
It was just about that time that
The lights of an old semi topped the hill
You should of seen me smile when i
Heard them air brakes come on, and
I climbed up in that cab where i
Knew itd be warm at the wheel
Well at the wheel sat a big man
Id have to say he must of weighed 210
The way he stuck out a big hand and
Said with a grin big joes the name
And this here rigs called phantom 309
Well I asked him why he called his
Rig such a name, but he just turned to me
And said why son dont you know this here
Rigll be puttin em all to shame, why
There aint a driver on this
Or any other line for that matter
Thats seen nothin but the taillights of big joe
And phantom 309
So we rode and talked the better part of the night
And I told my stories and joe told his and
I smoked up all his viceroys as we rolled along
He pushed her ahead with 10 forward gears
Man that dashboard was lit like the old
Madam la rue pinball, a serious semi truck
Until almost mysteriously, well it was the
Lights of a truck stop that rolled into sight
Joe turned to me and said Im sorry son
But Im afraid this is just as far as you go
You see I kinda gotta be makin a turn
Just up the road a piece, but Ill be
Damned if he didnt throw me a dime as he
Threw her in low and said go on in there
Son, and get yourself a hot cup of coffee
On big joe
And when joe and his rig pulled off into
The night, man in nothing flat they was
Clean outa sight
So I walked into the old stop and
Ordered me up a cup of mud sayin
big joes settin this dude up but
It got so deathly quiet in that
Place, you could of heard a pin drop
As the waiters face turned kinda
Pale, I said whats the matter did
I say somethin wrong? I kinda
Said with 8a half way grin. he said
no son, you see itll happen every
Now and then. you see every driver in
Here knows big joe, but let me
Tell you what happened just 10 years
Ago, yea it was 10 years ago
Out there at that cold lonely crossroads
Where you flagged joe down, and
There was a whole bus load of kids
And they were just comin from school
And they were right in the middle when
Joe topped the hill, and could
Have been slaughtered except
Joe turned his wheels, and
He jacknifed, and went
Into a skid, and folks around here
Say he gave his life to save that bunch
Of kids, and out there at that cold
Lonely crossroads, well they say it
Was the end of the line for
Big joe and phantom 309, but its
Funny you know, cause every now and then
Yea every now and then, when the
Moons holdin water, they say old joe
Will stop and give you a ride, and
Just like you, some hitchhiker will be
Comin by
so here son, he said to me, get
Yourself another cup of coffee, its on the
House, you see I want you to hang on
To that dime, yea you hang on to that
Dime as a kind of souvenir, a
Souvenir of big joe and phantom 309

16. I still have a CB radio in my car.
Wouldn't be without it. I've moved from Canada to the USA and I still see Drivers that I ran with when I was trucking all over the place. It's a great way to stay in touch as I drive almost 80 miles a day on the interstate to and from work.

19. You still use the CB? That's so cool!
I've often wondered if CB's were still used now that everyone has a cell phone.

22. Yes, I have a Cobra 29 LTD Classic
It's about 12 years old and works just dandy. It's a lot of fun at times. Keeps me abreast of what's going on in traffic ahead of me. I can detour and save precious time if there is a backup.

It's a comfort in the winter when it's storming fiercely. I always know that I'm not alone should I find myself in bad weather conditions.

39. There are 2 state troopers that patrol the area I drive
and I've talked to them on the cb. They always let me know what's going on up ahead and they tell me to be sure and not be afraid to ask for their help if I need it.

I feel very fortunate to have my cb and the friends I've made. I have a radio in every vehicle I've ever driven since 1975.

4. Willin'
Willin'
by Lowell George

I been warped by the rain, driven by the snow
I'm drunk and dirty don't ya know, and I'm still, oh I'm still
Out on the road late at night, I see my pretty Alice in every head light
Alice, Dallas Alice

I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin'

I've been kicked by the wind, robbed by the sleet
Had my head stoved in, but I'm still on my feet and I'm still... willin'
Now I smuggled some smokes and folks from Mexico
Baked by the sun, every time I go to Mexico, and I'm still

And I been from Tucson to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin

5. Feats Don't Fail Me Now
Feets Don't Fail Me Now
by Paul Barrere, Lowell George, Fred Martin

Your daddy says I'm no good
Your momma says keep away
Got to tell you truthful girl you can never make me stay
I got something up and down this coast
Bet you my last dollar girl I can love your love the most

Don't the sunrise look so pretty
Never such a sight
Like a rollin' into New York City
With the skyline in the morning light
Roll right through the night
I said Roll
Roll right through the night
I said Roll

Semi-smokin mama, you got to give me some
Heard you got the biggest -- hmm -- the biggest truck in town
Right on through to Baltimore you got to love me now
Got to do me gently, well it's feets don't fail me now
Don't fail me, feets don't fail me now

Don't the sunrise look so pretty
Never such a sight
Like a rollin' into New York City
With the skyline in the morning light
Roll right through the night
I said roll
Roll right through the night
Roll right through the night

6. Convoy in the Sky by Jello Biafra w/ Mojo Nixon
Written by Billy Clark.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gihPrx59uVA

The night was dark and stormy

And the roads were wet with rain

As Jimmy Jones rolled on and on

His destination Maine

He'd like to stop and rest awhile

But the freight just wouldn't keep

His body ached his mind felt numb

His eyes had closed with sleep

He thought about the time he lost

With a woman Mary Lou

And then his thoughts turned to his wife

He'd promised he'd be true

Temptation had stepped in his path

And he had failed the test

But if he stopped he knew his conscience

Wouldn't let him rest

Roll along (roll along)

Roll along (roll along)

Convoy in the sky

Convoy in the sky

There in the night he saw the lights

A truck stop just ahead

One cup of coffee he would have

Enough to clear his head

As he stepped on the running board

Strange music he did hear

And suddenly before his eyes

The truck stop disappeared

Roll along (roll along)

Roll along (roll along)

Convoy in the sky

Convoy in the sky

There in it's place a trailer sat

The color black as death

And seated there beneath the wheel

Sat the devil himself

And Jimmy's heart was filled with fear

For there before his eyes

A caravan of trailers came

A rollin' through the skies

Roll along (roll along)

Roll along (roll along)

Convoy in the sky

Convoy in the sky

The riders told of deeds they'd done

And detours they had made

Now driving for the devil

Was the price that they had paid

There is no time to stop and rest

He heard the devil cry

As he led that convoy on across

The dark and stormy sky

8. Gear Jammer.
George Thorogood and The Destroyers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcQWvWD9YR0

Running my rig around ninety-five,
Rockin' and rollin' in overdrive
My heart's beating like a jackhammer,
It's the midnight ride for the gear jammer

Nine long days through twenty-three states,
I gotta see my baby soon you know I just can't wait
The police catch me I'll end up in the slammer,
'Cause the law don't want no gear jammer

Running my rig in a mighty high gear,
I don't care where I go just long as it ain't here
Something gets in my way you know I'm gonna ram it,
Nobody fools around with this gear jammer

Running my rig about ninety-five,
I'm a-rockin' and a-rollin' in overdrive
My heart's beating like a jackhammer,
Don't you get in the way of this gear jammer

Well the midnight headlight find you on a rainy night
steep grade up ahead slow me down makin no time
gotta keep rollin
those windshield wipers slappin out a tempo
keepin perfect rhythm with the song on the radio
gotta keep rolling

Ooh I'm driving my life away, looking for a better way, for me
ooh I'm driving my life away, looking for a sunny day

Well the truck stop cutie comin' on to me
tried to talk me into a ride said I wouldn't be sorry
but she was just a baby
Hey waitress pour me another cup of coffee
pop me down jack me up shoot me out flyin' down the highway
lookin for the morning

Ooh I'm driving my life away, looking for a better way, for me
ooh I'm driving my life away, looking for a sunny day

Well the midnight headlight find you on a rainy night
steep grade up ahead slow me down makin no time
gotta keep rollin

11. Pop o Pies cover Truckin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ej5gOgsInJU

Truckin' - Pop-O-Pies Versions

The Pop-O-Pies recorded three versions of Truckin', two on their "White EP" and one on "Joe's Second Album". Semi-parodies but with much of the original lyrics.

The lyrics to the first version on the White Album are:

Truckin', got my chips cashed in
Keep truckin', down in New York ...

One, two, three, four

Truckin', like a do-do-do-do
New York, across from New-New-New-
New Jersey, just won't let you in

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
New York, and Detroit it's all the same street
A typical city involved in a typical daydream
A typical city involved in a typical daydream
A typical city involved in a typical daydream
A typical city involved in a ...

One, two, three, four

Truckin', up to Buffalo
I've been thinking, got to mellow slow
Takes time, to pick a place to go
Just keep truckin' on

What in the world ever became of Sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Living in bed, white bread and cocaine
All the boys can say is ain't it a shame

Sometimes the sun's all shining on me
Other times it's raining out
And other times I can barely see
Why it makes me
Want to scream and shout
On cocaine

Dallas, got a soft drink machine
Houston, across from New-New-New-
New Jersey, just the corn and beans
Just won't let you be

You're sick of hanging around and you like to travel
Tired of travelling, I want to stop at MacDonald's
One of these days they know you got to get going
They know you got to g-g-g-g-go

Truckin', I'm a going home
Wo, wo, baby, baby, baby, baby
Home, got to patch my bones
Get back truckin' on

The "White EP" also contains a "rap version":

I been on the road, I got my chips cashed in
I keep truckin' around like a doo-dah man
Saying New York it's no place to go
Because it's just too close to old NJ

Chorus
We're truckin', up to Buffalo
You see the people round here, they move too slow
You gotta take some time, pick a place to go
Just keep truckin'

What became of sweet Jane
Living on speed, speed and cocaine
She lost her head, she isn't the same
mother she

Sometimes the lights all shining on me
Other times, baby, I just can't see
You gotta think, pick a place, pick a place to be
Take a job, take a train, take a row on the sea

Travelling, no point in stopping
Visible and buy some
Aptly done, your friends all know it
You got a key, the key to get going

Dalls, JR, soft machine
people, you know what I mean
Richmond, Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens
Much too close to New Orleans

I been on the road, I got my chips cashed in
I keep truckin' around like a doo-dah man
Saying New York
Too close to New York
Too close to New York
Too close to New York

Truckin', now don't say maybe
Wo-wo baby, baby, baby, baby
Back up, stop the road
And get back truckin' on

The final version, on "Joe's Second Record" is similar to the first version on the "White EP":

One, two, three, four

Truckin', got my chips cashed in
Keep truckin', like a do-do-do-do-do-do-do
New York, to close to New-New-New-
New Jersey, it just won't let you be

What in the world ever became of travelling
Detroit, Detroit, Detroit it's all the same street
A typical city involved in a typical daydream
A typical city involved in a typical daydream
A typical city involved in a typical daydream

Two, three, four

Truckin', up to Buffalo
I've been thinking about good times so mellow
Takes time, and you pick a place to go
Just keep truckin' on

What in the world ever became of Sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Living in bed, white bread and cocaine
All her freinds can say is ain't it a shame

Sometimes the lights all shining on me
Other times it's like I'm
Why it makes me
Want to scream and shout

OK, got a soft drink machine
Houston, too close to New-New-New-
New Jersey, got the corn and beans
But just won't let you be

What in the world ever became of travelling
I'm tired of travelling, I want to stop at MacDonald's
One of these days they know you got to get going
They know you got to g-g-g-g-go

Truckin', I'm a-going home
Wo, wo, baby, baby, baby, baby
Back home, got to pack my bones
Get back truckin' on

13. Junior Brown. "Broke Down South of Dallas"

That wife of mine, a supicious kind
She says that I'm quite a flirter
But I've been a good boy all of the time
And I wouldn't do nothing to hurt her
She'll tan my hide for spending the night
With Betty Lou or Alice
But I'm sleeping alone in this wreck I own
I broke down south of Dallas

When I stumble home at the break of dawn
She better not be suspicious
'Cause I'm about at the end of my rope
And she better not act too vicious
I'm a-covered in grease from my head to my feet
Hands are cut and callose
I spent all my bucks on a broke down truck
I broke down south of Dallas

I'm a happy guy when the miles go by
There ain't too much that I'm missing
But I've got a wife with a frying pan
And when she talks I listen
I'm the king of the road
She's the queen of the house
And it may not be a palace
But it sure beats a load by the side of the road
Broke down south of Dallas
Yeah, it sure beats a load by the side of the road
Broke down south of Dallas

54. Junior played with a local NM band in the 70's that did a great version of Phantom 309
The Last Mile Ramblers--their version is on the only album they did with "J.B.Brown" on guitar ....It was called While They Last ( from 1974). Probably still copies of it available (?) if any hard core Junior Brown fans are interested in hearing him way back when.

14. Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses - Kathy Matea
Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses

Charlie's got a gold watch
Don't seem like a whole lot
After thirty years of drivin'
Up and down the interstate
But Charlie's had a good life
And Charlie's got a good wife
And after tonight she'll no longer
be countin' the days

CHORUS

Eighteen wheels and a dozen roses
Ten more miles on his four day run
A few more songs on the all night radio
And he'll spend the rest if his life
with the one that he loves

They'll buy a Winnebago
Set out to find America
Do a lotta catchin' up
A little at a time

With pieces of the old dream
They're gonna light the old flame
Doin' what they please
Leavin every other reason behind

(Repeat CHORUS)

(Instrumental)

(Repeat CHORUS)

18. Theme song from the 1950s TV series "Cannonball"
I loved that show as a little kid about two truckers and their weekly adventures on the highway. It was a great tune:

Barrelin' down the highway
Wheelin' right along
Hear the tires hummin'
Hummin' out a song
The rumble of the diesel
The shiftin' of the gears
The rhythm when he's rollin'
It's music to his ears
Cannonba-a-a-ll! Cannonba-a-a-ll!

Any kind of weather
Any time of day
When the rig is ready
He'll be on his way
He'll carry any cargo
He'll go anywhere
Name the destination
And brother, he'll be there
Cannonba-a-a-ll! Cannonba-a-a-ll!

26. TOMBSTONE EVERY MILE
All you big and burly men who roll the trucks along
Better listen, you'll be thankful when you hear my song
You have really got it made, if you're haulin' goods
Anyplace on earth but those Hainesville Woods

It's a stretch of road up north in Maine
That's never, ever, ever seen a smile
If they buried all the truckers lost in them Woods
There'd be a tombstone every mile
Count 'em off, there'd be a tombstone every mile

When you're loaded with potatoes and you're headed down
You've gotta drive the Woods to get to Boston town
When it's winter up in Maine, better check it over twice
That Hainesville road is just a ribbon of ice

It's a stretch of road up north in Maine
That's never, ever, ever seen a smile
If they buried all the truckers lost in them Woods
There'd be a tombstone every mile
Count 'em off, there'd be a tombstone every mile

When you're talkin' to a trucker that's been haulin' goods
Down that stretch of road in Maine they call the Hainesville Woods
He'll tell you that dying and goin' down below
Won't be half as bad as driving on that road of ice and snow

It's a stretch of road up north in Maine
That's never, ever, ever seen a smile
If they buried all the truckers lost in them Woods
There'd be a tombstone every mile
Count 'em off, there'd be a tombstone every mile

DRUG STORE TRUCK DRIVIN' MAN

Hes a drug store truck drivin man
Hes a head of the ku klux klan
When summer rolls around
Hell be lucky if hes not in town

Well hes got him a house on the hill
He plays country records till youve had your fill
Hes a firemans friend, hes an all night dj
But he sure does think different from the records he plays

Hes a drug store truck drivin man
Hes a head of the ku klux klan
When summer rolls around
Hell be lucky if hes not in town

Well he dont like the young folks I know
He told me one night on his radio show
Hes got him a medal he won in the war
Weighs five hundred pounds and sleeps on his floor

Hes a drug store truck drivin man
Hes a head of the ku klux klan
When summer rolls around
Hell be lucky if hes not in town

Hes been like a father to me
Hes the only dj you can hear after three
Im an all night musician in a rock n roll band
And why he dont like me, I cant understand

Hes a drug store truck drivin man
Hes a head of the ku klux klan
When summer rolls around
Hell be lucky if hes not in town

32. Looking At the World Through a Windshield - Del Reeves
When I was just a little bitty kid I remembered one time Mama said
Daddy sends you all his love from Frisco Bay
I didn’t understand till I was grown
why my Daddy didn’t spend a little time at home
Instead of runnin’ around the country that way

Now I’m looking at the world through a windshield
And see everything in a little bit different light
I got a sweet little thing I’m wantin’ to see in Nashville
And I’m down around Dallas and a’rollin’ on fast tonight

Long strips of rubber that you see
Were burned off of this rig by the likes of me
And they’ll ride along the highways in this land
I’m gonna sign my name in this diesel smoke
And let the ones that come behind me choke

Now I’m looking at the world through a windshield
Watchin’ it a flyin’ by me at the right
I got a sweet little thing I’m wantin’ to see in Nashville
And I’m down around Dallas and a’rollin’ on fast tonight

I’ve pushed this rig through sleet and rain
And I’ve driven through the rough terrain
Of the Rockies to the docks of old L.A.
On down that old Pacific shore, sing north and headin’ for Baltimore
Of somethin’ ‘bout two thousand miles away

Now I’m looking at the world through a windshield
Watchin’ it a flyin’ by me at the right
I got a sweet little thing I’m wantin’ to see in Nashville
And I’m down around Dallas and a’rollin’ on fast tonight

back in the day, so it's easy to have missed if you weren't around then.

Jackson Browne's Saturate Before Using and For Everyman albums are unarguably two of his very best. They were his first two.

"Jackson Browne wrote this for his first album, but he didn't know how to finish the song. He gave it to his friend Glenn Frey, who needed songs for his new band - the Eagles. Frey finished the song and the Eagles used it as the first song on their first album."

56. I've been everywhere - Johnny Cash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmFN9C9PVpg

I was totin' my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load.
"If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride."
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"

I've been everywhere, man.
I've been everywhere, man.
Crossed the desert's bare, man.
I've breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man.
I've been everywhere.

I've been to:
Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma,
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo,
Tocapillo, Baranquilla, and Perdilla, I'm a killer.

I've been to:
Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,
Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana,
Monterey, Faraday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa,
Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa,
Tennessee, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake.

I've been to:
Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Ombabika,
Schefferville, Jacksonville, Waterville, Costa Rica,
Pittsfield, Springfield, Bakersfield, Shreveport,
Hackensack, Cadillac, Fond du Lac, Davenport,
Idaho, Jellico, Argentina, Diamantina,
Pasadena, Catalina, see what I mean-a.

I've been to:
Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Gravelbourg, Colorado,
Ellisburg, Rexburg, Vicksburg, Eldorado,
Larimore, Admore, Haverstraw, Chatanika,
Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska, Opelika,
Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City,
Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity.

59. "Truckin'" Greatful Dead
Truckin' - got my chips cashed in
Keep Truckin - like the doodah man
Together - more or less in line
Just keep Truckin on

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings

Dallas - got a soft machine
Houston - too close to New Orleans
New York - got the ways and means
but just won't let you be

Most of the cats you meet on the street speak of True Love
Most of the time they're sittin and cryin at home
One of these days they know they gotta get goin
out of the door and down to the street all alone

Truckin - like the doodah man
once told me you got to play your hand
sometime - the cards ain't worth a dime
if you don't lay em down

Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it's been

What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Living on reds, vitamin C and cocaine
all a friend can say is "ain't it a shame"

Truckin' -- up to Buffalo
Been thinkin - you got to mellow slow
Takes time - you pick a place to go
and just keep Truckin on

Sitting and staring out of a hotel window
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
I'd like to get some sleep before I travel
but if you got a warrant I guess you're gonna come in

Busted - down on Bourbon Street
Set up - like a bowling pin
Knocked down - it gets to wearing thin
They just won't let you be

69. Long Thin Dawn
I'll bet you're just fainting with surprise to see me posting a Gordon Lightfoot song. :)

Long Thin Dawn (Back Here On Earth) 3:01

That long thin dawn
That long thin dawn
Is comin' on again
I've seen the hills of Frisco and the streets of Montreal
In every town I've been to I've had someone to call
From Winnipeg to Edmonton, Vancouver to St. Paul
I've had so many good friends I couldn't miss them all

And that long thin dawn
That long thin dawn
Is comin' on again

Last night I came to Denver beneath the snow-capped ridge
I thought about my darlin' as I stood beneath the bridge
And there were times I made her cry but I guess by now she's learned
That any time I've wandered I always have returned

And that long thin dawn
That long thin dawn
Is comin' on again

Right now I'm on a highway just east of Omaha
Riding shotgun on the biggest rig you ever saw
With forty tons of pig iron and a trucker known as Bill
All the way to Windsor, we've got some miles to kill

And that long thin dawn
That long thin dawn
Is comin' on again

While climbin' up a hillside, Bill drops 'er down a gear
And the engine sings so sweetly 'tis music to my ear
I tell him how I long to be just like him if I can
Drivin' like the restless wind across this precious land

Says Bill "the air is clean tonight" as he puffs a big cigar
"And if this rig keeps rollin', my boy you'll travel far
But when you are a trucker you'll come to realize
The only thing a man can do is watch the world go by"

And that long thin dawn
That long thin dawn
Is comin' on again

That long thin dawn
That long thin dawn
Is comin' on again
