Please bear with this question (LAST time): Is lurking allowed with Twitter, Face Book, My Space? |
|
Honestly, I'm curious and would like to peek ("follow" sounds creepy) some comedians or media news people, but just registering is intimidating for starters---
Then, what, you have to declare yourself a "follower" and get approved? And then you are LISTED for all to see as a follower (not lurk)?
From the VAGUE impressions that have seeped down to my level, I think I would want to use Twitter and Face Book. What is the difference between Face Book and My Space?
Thanks for putting up with these idiot questions that have probably been answered before.

1. I'm not positive, but I don't think you can lurk on Facebook. |
|
I think you have to register and I think you have to be accepted by the person before you can see their page. Most public personality types will accept all friend requests, and you'll be listed as a friend.
I don't think you have to register on myspace, at least not right away, and you can lurk there unless the person has made their page private. Then you can only see their stuff if they accept your friend request. Personalities (if they have a myspace page)are most likely public, so you can probably follow someone that way without it being known to anyone.
I'm pretty sure you have to register on Twitter, and you can follow anyone, but they will know that you're following them and you'll be listed that way.

2. I lurked a lot on Myspace when most of the profiles were public. |

After Newscorp took over Myspace, and after most people went to private on their profiles, it wasn't as fun.
Facebook doesn't allow lurking. Which is why I find Facebook to be totally boring and pointless and barely go on there. There may be old classmates that you aren't really interested in having as a friend but you might want to see what they are up to. Facebook doesn't let you do that.
I have no idea about Twitter.

on Facebook
For example, I'm a fan of: The Daily Show and Dr Oz. That means that when they update those profiles, I wil see them on my "wall" I can choose to comment on those entries, or not.
Oh, and Lewis Black, I'm a fan of his too. It's a cool way to keep up with people/projects you enjoy.
edit: It does require that you register, though. But, you aren't required to post anything if you don't want to. Not only that, you can choose a screen name, like you do here, you don't have to use your real name. I know one DUer who uses their DU name.
