"Welcome to DU"

Okay, is it me, or can this greeting seem a little patronizing sometimes? Is there a rule (written or unwritten) that says you can't say it until you pass the mystic 1000-post-mark?

I've been posting for about a year and a half, and I've only done around 150 posts. 1000 posts just doesn't seem like a life goal which should confer seniority of any sort. In most areas of real life, posting 1000 times at any one website might well mean you need to get outside and get some sunshine.

Sometimes, when I see that "welcome to DU" thing, it just makes me feel like they're patting the other person on the head.

...or maybe I'm just in a mood...

I think that most times, the welcome is sincere. The Mods and Admins encourage members to welcome people...most people just look at the low post count and assume the poster is new, which may not be the case. :hi:

I can see where this poster would feel like that if they have been here for over a year. As I told him/her, many don't look at profiles and just see the post count. But no need to tell them they seem judgmental. Talk about judgmental.

They see the post count and try to make them feel welcome. That is all. :)

I was not strictly talking about when people here welcome me, specifically. I just wondered if others had made the same observation.

I don't blame those who genuinely welcome, which I'm beginning to gather makes for a higher proportion of "welcomes" than I thought.

46. Well now. There is a quite a history behind that. There was an honored member named

newyawker99 who was a one-woman hospitality committee. She welcome most newcomers, and posted threads that tracked their post count, and did birthday threads, and anniversary threads.

She was a great person, and is missed.

Now, many people have to welcome newer members (which I personally look at as here less than a year/ and or less than 100 posts or so.

Who can welcome someone?

Anyone who wants to.




Of course, there is someone who has decided to make that part of his role here on DU...

But I still remember her welcome.

It's just people being friendly; I sometimes check a profile, but usually just shout out a welcome.
