Now, list your top 5 male singers from the 90s and 00s |
|
Edited on Sun Aug-02-09 09:04 PM by mvd
To clarify, singers who released their first CD approx. in the 90s or 00s, either in a group or solo. Thought we'd give the newer artists their own thread based on the other male singers thread.
Five of my favorites:
Adam Lambert (when he shows his quirkiness yet doesn't let it get to excess) Billie Joe Armstrong A.C. Newman Josh Ritter Steven Page

I'm definitely not a fan of the nasally, whiny falsetto trend of the past 10 years or so.

IMO there were still plenty of good vocalists to make my list.

I cannot think of a better singer (he's still singing, I'm sure) than Steve Perry. How THAT voice can come out of that little toad of a body still amazes me.

7. No, his throat cancer stopped his singing career for the most part. |
|
Journey had to replace him with some young kid from the Phillipines (who has a pretty amazing voice).

|
Hardly qualifies him to be one of the top male singers. When this guy gets tour experience under his belt then perhaps he can be considered.

based on his vocals. Plus, he's been around longer than Idol and I like the pre-Idol recordings I have heard.

10. Until the guy can start filling out stadiums and arenas with his voice... |
|
and sell millions of records then he happens to be nothing more than someone who happens to have a great voice. But if we use your criteria then I'm putting my nephew on the list because he has an amazing voice and he's done so well in all the high school musicals. And while we're at it, there was this male soloist at our church that has an amazing voice too. I'll put him on there. Oh and I just watched "Mamma Mia" the music and damn if Colin Firth can't carry a tune. I'll put him on my top 5 too!
Lambert is overrated. Let me see what his career is like in 5 years before I start comparing him to some of the top singers in the industry. Having a great voice doesn't make you one of the best singers out there. He hasn't proven anything yet

I'm keeping him on my personal list. Under my criteria, top doesn't mean most popular or greatest career achiever.

12. You're discounting his stage experience. |
|
He's perfomed in front of audiences since he was ten. It really isn't fair to dismiss theater performers as not being serious musicians because they don't tour in the same fashion as a rock singer might.
Adam Lambert has a phenomenal voice. He could sing the phone book to a group of penguins and I'd still be impressed. He doesn't have to tour Europe for me to recognize his vocal ability. Sure he'll have to pay his dues to get credibility in the rock genre, if that is truly where his interest lies. But as a singer, regardless of genre, he has more ability than anyone I've heard in years.

15. Exactly. Talent and achievement don't always go hand-in-hand. |
|
It seems that some of the most talent performers never get the credit they deserve. And achievement is only a matter of perspective anyhow. There are those who achieve huge stardom through musical compromise, while others take the higher road, are true to their craft and subsequently relegated to the netherworld of obscurity or worse, pidgenholed as out-of-the-mainstream. In this respect "mainstream" is synonymous with average, so true art can never be mainstream.
(Stopping before I get a full rant going, complete with drool and spittle. Not attractive.) :7
Who can say what Adam Lambert will achieve in his career? But his incredible range and the control over his voice, can't be denied.

I say this as a pop fan, too - there are those in pop music that do it better than some chart-toppers, yet don't get the recognition for some reason.
Kris Allen might have won American Idol, but that doesn't place him as a better vocalist. As long as we are talking vocals and not overall music (as we have not seen what Adam can do yet,) Adam is a good choice IMO.

I tend to prefer female singers. I think there's a lack of male singers right now, particularly in pop music (my favorite type of music). Adam Lambert is a very good singer but he hasn't released a CD yet so it's hard to accurately judge him.

And I'm judging Adam based on his vocals. I like pop music and tend to prefer females (at least in modern music) too, and still think there are enough good singers for a list.
I could add Colin Meloy, Chris Martin, James Mercer, David Gray, and more.

23. Yes, I remember listening to one of Adam's unofficial songs |
|
It was fairly good. When it comes to singers, I tend to judge people on a whole (musically and vocally). The music is just as important to me as the vocals. For example, if I was to make a list of which female singers have the best voice (Celine, Mariah, Christina Aguilera) and a list of my favorite female singers (Britney, Madonna, Kelly Clarkson), the lists would be completely different. I guess it depends on what is meant by "top" singer.
