"The Time Traveller's Wife" movie
Just saw it. Didn't read the book (probably should).

Here's what I thought:

Did NOT understand why in the first scene Henry didn't recognize Clare. If he was a time traveller who presumably knew her from the time she was a child, why didn't he know who she was?

For all of the fancy in the movie I thought the performances were good. The photography was excellent. And I loved the sets and costumes. Really a great job.

Music was haunting. A nice job there. The German Christmas carol that was repeated was a lovely, if somewhat of a downer, theme.

Performances were good. Bana and McAlister were very good, as were the supporting roles (all of them). Nice job, all around, kudos, esp. the kids.

I'm still a little confused. How was Henry in two places at one time (when Alba is conceived after the older Henry has his vasectomy)? How was the visit "after death" arranged? Why didn't his mother reappear after death?

Just a few questions. If you have any answers, I'd love to hear them...thanks...

1. I read the book
Haven't seen the movie. I still can't answer your questions.

I enjoyed the book though.

2. I read the book, and thought I understood it when I read it
but unfortunately I have forgotten the answers (if I ever really understood, that is).

I'm sure I'll see it when it's released on DVD...

3. I agree with everyone so far
I read the book. Great read. Not a really deep book. Sometimes it's best not to overanalyze a movie or book.

4. Oh, I do try not to overanalyze but some of it just didn't make sense.
I don't like blatant nonsense. It takes away from the movie, which I kind of liked...

5. Hmm, lets see...
The first time Henry meets Claire in the meadow, he is older than he was when he met her in the Library as an adult, hence, he had not met her yet because he time travels to her in the meadow later in life. WHich is why she had written all the dates in the notebook, so he'd know.

Henry can be in two places at one because he travels to another time, where he has to also be there in *that* present time.

and you should read the book. It's quite good...

6. OK, I got the first instance that you explained. Fine. But I don't get the
one where he is asleep in his bed and also in the car, making Clare pregnant becasue he is younger. That does not make too much sense. In all other sequences in the film when he disappears he disappears (not there, clothes deflate). But in that scene, he is sleeping in his bed but also calling Clare on her cell phone to come get him...see what I mean?

7. Ok
A younger version of Henry calls present day Clare and gets her pregnant. Present day Henry is home asleep because he isn't the one traveling. The traveling version went forward instead of backward that time.

Was just having this conversation at work. The movie probably makes much more sense if you read the book first.

10. OK, so there are two versions of Henry. Now can you tell me how she avoids miscarrying
Alba when she has miscarried twice before? Was Henry wrong in his belief that her miscarriages had something to do with his screwed up genes?

12. Yes on the genes
In the book she miscarries way more than twice, thus the huge issue it became. There's so much from the book that was left out.

Dr. Kendricks was a much bigger character in the book. He figures out that the babies are traveling out of her uterus, but I can't remember how he stops it the last time. Sorry.

11. I haven't seen the movie yet or
read the book, but hearing about The Time Traveler's Wife makes me think of the short story, "The Dandelion Girl" by Robert F. Young. Our dear friend oneighty had talked about the story in the DU Writers Group and thought we might enjoy reading it. I know I did.

For anyone who'd like to read it, here's a link to "The Dandelion Girl":
