Hey Loungeians, I need suggestions on things to do in Kansas City.
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 09:29 PM by MilesColtrane
I'll be going there for a couple of days and need to access the vast knowledge of the Lounge on things to see, places to eat, etc...

Only things I have on the agenda right now are the American Jazz Museum, and Charlie Parker's grave.

(I probably won't be standin' on the corner of 12th Street & Vine with a bottle of Kansas City wine.)

1. You won't find 12th St. and Vine.
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 09:42 PM by evlbstrd
It doesn't exist. But, while you're at the Jazz Museum, you'll be near the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. A few blocks further east is Arthur Bryant's Barbecue, a must while in KC. Avoid the Power and Light District downtown. It's all national chain stuff. Go to the Crossroads Arts District on 18th St., between Southwest Boulevard and Troost Ave., especially if it's the first Friday of the month. Labor Day weekend is Irish Fest at Crown Center, 20th and Grand.

5. Arthur Bryant's, for sure!
And check out Winstead's for burgers. They're a KC tradition, and while they're not the GREATEST burger you've ever had, they're really good, plus they serve EXCELLENT onion rings, and out-of-this-world, made-from-scratch ice cream sodas. My favorite is the cherry.

Another good place to eat is Jasper's, for very good Italian - http://www.jasperskc.com/index.htm

Also, don't miss the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum - http://www.nelson-atkins.org/

And the National World War I Museum and Memorial - http://www.theworldwar.org/s/110/new/index_community.aspx

Since you're going to be in KCMO, you won't be far from Independence, MO, the home of Harry Truman, you really should visit the Harry S Truman Library and Museum - http://www.trumanlibrary.org/. A really wonderful place. I had the pleasure to deliver the papers of one of Mr. Truman's advisers - Charles S. Murphy - after Mr. Murphy died, and the people there could not have been lovelier. It's marvelous, really.

I only lived in Kansas City for a bit over a year, but it was a good year in a good place. I hope you have a great time...........

6. Rent a car, drive to Chicago.
Sorry. Never been to either. Just in a smart-ass one-liner mood. I'm working late, really late, and trying to make the whole world suffer with me.

10. Bring 'em on!
As I sit here sipping a cold beer and watching dinner cook on the stove, I realize that while my life in general sucks a fat one, at least I'm not working right now.

7. Truman Library
Hi,
Depends on what you like doing. I would definitely say go to the Truman Library which is in Independence, which is not very far at all. It is an awesome museum. If you like amusement parks there is Worlds of Fun, which I haven't been to in ages, but had fun when I did go. I am sure there are a lot of other things to do depending on your interest.

Have fun, and peace.

12. Go and visit John and Nancy Blogin,
at Honest John's Fireworks, 4531 NW Gateway, in Riverside, Missouri. John and Nancy are 2 of the nicest people I've ever met in the fireworks business. Tell them Bob Weaver sent you there. I'm sure you will have a great time, get some good fireworks and they will probably show you or may even take you to some spot where you can light them. They probably won't be there Sept. 9-12 because they will be at the National Fireworks Association convention. But after that they will be delighted to see you.

15. I'll be there on bidness for 2 or 3 days, and it'll be for the first time.
I'm having some work done on my double bass at KC Strings.

I will have my own ride so that's not a problem.

I'm wondering about where to go to see some live music...maybe sit in somewhere.

16. ah, kc strings is in my neck of the woods...
Edited on Tue Sep-01-09 01:15 AM by elana i am
it's outside downtown in merriam, on the kansas side. not much to do out here. there's a farmers market on saturday mornings down the street from kc strings. don't suppose you'd be interested in that? :D

i can't really help you much with live music clubs because i can't go places where there's smokers and lots of people with perfumes and colognes crammed in to a small space. i couldn't tell you squat on that, but i did find this listing of places that feature live jazz music...

21. avoid the airport?
Sorry, it was the strangest airport I have been in, with really crappy food

I would think that all the great jazz stuff in the city would be fun, as well as all the great architecture, which was NOT on display at the airport. :D

22. The Nelson,
Kelly's in Westport, Ollie Gate's Barbecue, or Quick's Barbecue in KCK. Quicks makes my all-time favorite bbq sauce.
