Work wants to make me a supervisor, but... |
|
The head of our department (food and beverage) wants to make me a supervisor. The responsibilities would increase greatly and I'd be in charge of the 2nd shift, but here's the rub: 2 of the 3 people on 2nd shift would have to have their hours cut or switched to a different shift in order to make room for me on the shift.
I've been stressing about this for a couple days, and I think I finally have my answer. Paul says he likes it, but I'd like some other opinions if you don't mind.
"First I'd like to thank you for the offer. I think, however, that it would be very difficult to come to a shift as a supervisor when you start out having the shift mad at you because you are the cause of them losing wages. I would not be able to inspire loyalty among my co-workers if my first actions result in lost hours and wages, or forces them to work split shifts to make up the difference. So, while I appreciate the offer, I must respectfully decline."
Thoughts?

1. you know they will make someone else the supervisor and the result will be the same |
|
just it wont be you whos the supervisor and in a position to help the other employees. Standing by your principles is good but sometimes you can do more good by bending them a bit, good luck

...someone's going to be supervisor. You turn this down, you won't get another chance for promotion with this company, most likely.
If that's what you want, then turn this down and get comfortable with being right where you are.

3. Unfortunately, they want supervisors who are willing to make tough decisions |
|
The reason won't matter, and they likely won't respect it (but they'll say they do).
IMHO it doesn't gain you anything.
