I thought it was a mausoleum. I could be wrong though. And, since I'm not going to bother to look it up... meh...

5. My dear Tuesday Afternoon!
Ah......Falling Water!

It is my favorite of all those listed!

I was lucky enough to see it a year ago...

It is huge and gorgeous!

Sigh.

10. Biltmore.
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 10:55 AM by Moondog
Definitely.

The White House is a goldfish bowl; the Taj is a tomb; like most of FLW's stuff, there are problems with the roof and the windows at Fallingwater; the log cabin is a wee bit rustic for me; Westminster is drafty; and Versailles was built without bathrooms. Besides, I like the area around Asheville.

13. Frank's designs were ahead of engineering. But, I have to agree
that the Biltmore has great appeal although I could add some bathrooms to Versailles and be quite comfortable :)

that Frank Lloyd Wright's designs were supposed to make sense frome the inside and not necessarily the outside.

48. Of course, there's a word for an architect who doesn't understand engineering limits.
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 08:43 PM by NNadir
It's called "incompetent."

"Falling Water" might be art, but as architecture, it may be over-rated.

Lots of people tried to warn Wright about "Falling Water."

A lot of money has been spent trying to keep it from falling down.

Personally, I hope that in the future waterfalls will not be converted to houses, but that's just my view.

19. Been to Falling Water four times
Once, my hiking buddies and I were so caked in mud they would only let us tour the outside. That day there was a steady rain so you could see how water was channeled around and through the house down to the stream.

Another time, there was snow and it was about 5 degrees Fahrenheit so you could see how the ice frames parts of the house, all the fireplaces were blazing and we were the only people on the tour that day.

Another time, the flowering forest plants were blooming wildly

The last time was during the peak of the fall colors

63. Yeah, it is, isn't it?
I burned a copy from TCM a few years ago and bring it out every year or so. That "breathing" door in the study and the banging noise was pretty scary too. That and how Markway's wife got "stuck" in the other parts of the house because it kept closing doors on her like it was steering her away from everyone :o

I believe Dr. Markway said that there were no right-angles anywhere in the house. Makes you wonder what the feng shui was like

55. Monticello
I've been to plenty of palaces, and that;s what they are: palaces, something way beyond human scale.

Monticello is gorgeous, without being overwhelming. It expresses the many interests of its builder and it fits into its environment perfectly. To sit at the back of the house in the evening overlooking the gardens after a meal, conversing with Jefferson must have been bliss. Especially if sharing a gigantic doobie rolled from TJ's own crop.

Built by the eccentric Sir Frank Crisp, then owned by nuns (who covered up the statues' naughty bits), then purchased by George. Went to Henley-on-Thames years ago but didn't have the guts to march up to the gates; I regret it now.
