When the zombie apocalypse comes will people try to protect/hide their zombified loved ones?

That seems to have happened in a few Romero zombie movies, but does that really seem plausible?

I'm going to keep my best friend on a choke chain in the shed and we'll play video games as long as he doesn't try to bite me.

He's my mate, I can't just go all cricket bat or shovel on him.
