Does anyone know the Bible verse about "comforting widows
and the afflicted?" I think that's how it goes. I think it is one of the Christian duties but I don't recall where it is in the NT.

1. Maybe James 1:27?
Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

learn to do right!
Seek justice,
encourage the oppressed.
Defend the cause of the fatherless,
plead the case of the widow.

Or, from the KJV

Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

7. Today's lectionary in the Episcopal Church
which also contains this memorable line from James:

"faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead."

8. Martin Luther was not too fond of the book of James but I always
found it quotable and to the point.
