1. It isn't just dialect and accent - there's also a protocol factor.
I worked for the corporate office of a company in NH (incorporated in DE of course) that had facilities around the country. My boss was all New England - fast talk, fast to jump to conclusion, and the conservation of A's and R's rule. One of our facilities was in Atlanta. He hated the director of that center, but I thought she was a wonderful person. Through observation, I figured out why.

Him: "I need the patient reports FAX'd up here in the next ten minutes."

Her: "I'm kinda busy, but I'll see what I can do."

Two hours later, he busts into my office bitching about her. I tell him I'll handle it.

Me: "Hey, how's it going."

Her: "Oh, fine. Kinda cold today, didn't break 75."

Me: "We're having a warm one. It got up to 40 by noon. The crocus are just coming out, so that's a good sign."

Her: "Sort of a late season here. The forsythia just started blooming and the tomatoes haven't popped a single blossom."

Me: "Well, I can't do much about tomatoes until the last of the snow clears."

Her: "So, what did you call about?"

Me: "(my boss) has his undies in a twist about some report he's waiting for. He's driving me nuts. Any idea what he's talking about?"

Her: "Oh yeah, I was supposed to send that up a while ago."

Me: "Any chance you could get to that? He's driving me nuts."

Her: "No problem sweetie. I'll get to it right away."

Me: "Thanks, and make sure you watch for a frost on those tomatoes. I know well enough you aren't out of the danger zone yet."

Her: "We are so. Have to run."

Five minutes later, the FAX rings. My boss never understood how I could do that.
