Why does my USB mouse randomly stop working?
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 05:53 PM by pstokely
It will stop working for a few seconds, then it will start working again, and then stop again. I'm not having this problem with my other USB devices (keyboard, hard drive, printer).

1. Maybe there's a short in the wire.
Is it an optical mouse or does it have a ball? Either way, it might need to be cleaned :)

8. ok, so it's not the mouse
Try unplugging all your USB devices except the mouse and see if the problem persists. It's possible that it's a misbehaving peripheral but that you only notice it when it bothers the mouse.

2. Maybe you aren't feeding it the right kind of cheese.
Kraft chemical orange processed American cheese food product in individually wrapped slices will DEFINITELY piss it off.

4. Do you have any witches in your neighborhood?
They might be using their dark magic to mess with you.

7. Why would a USB mouse have batteries?
Wouldn't it draw its power from the USB port?

11. I'll second that suggestion.
Mine acts wonky then.

Also when something is between the USB transmitter and the mouse (corner of desk, etc.) or if the cats have been knawing on it and mess with the USB connection again.

13. Could also be a RAM thing...
I have an older computer, and if I have too many programs open, or too many browser windows going at once, my mouse acts goofy like that, too. Ditto for the keyboard. Mine are both wireless, but I occasionally ran into this with a USB mouse and keyboard. Not enough memory to handle all of those goings on.

14. Windows or Mac?
If it's Mac, your mouse is bad. If it's Windows, well, then it's a "Windows issue."

17. Is it a City Mouse or a Country Mouse?

City mice are used to taking frequent coffee breaks. Country mice just work straight through.
