My 12 year old Daughter made me watch Hanna Montana |
|
The Movies is kinda silly, but some of the music was not half bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxS__WXqf_sI really was impressed with this

1. I am in preadolescent Disney/Nickelodeon hell around here most days. And if |
|
they aren't watching a teeny bopper show then it's cartoons.
We finally let the kids have a TV in their bedroom because their programming had completely taken over the TiVo in the living room.

2. It's scary when I recognize characters from one Disney show |
|
and see them in another, "Hey, that's Taylor from High School Musical" when we're watching "The Suite Life of Zach & Cody" or similar. Or, that I get the joke that the girl playing Maddie in Suite Life was too nice to play Sharpay in High School Musical, even though Maddie & Sharpay are both played by Ashley Tisdale.
And, you'd think my daughter would die if she missed the "Wizards of Waverly Place" movie premiere a few weeks back!

4. Oh, we were glued for the episode of Suite Life when people from all the other shows were. And |
|
yesterday my younger son told me that I sounded like Candace, and I totally knew who he was talking about and what made him think I sounded like her. x(

8. Last week, my daughter told me |
|
that she didn't have to do something because, "I have the gift of pretty," which was a line from the show, "Sonny with a Chance." That one didn't fly with me, though I didn't recognize it at first.

9. I had to trash iCarly because she wanted to dump a BF because he collected |
|
Beanie Baby type toys. My kids have tons of stuffed animal friends, including Beanies, although I didn't mention that. I did, however, point out that I thought she was being extremely superficial, to which ElderGreenKid said, "Well, that's just how Carly is."
I suggested that she wasn't much a of a role model, but since my kids are boys they probably don't much care. (The only thing I really like about that show is the older brother. He is so ridiculously out of it I can't help but laugh.)

11. that is pretty shallow |
|
I already had to explain to my daughter that Sharpay is not a good role-model, even though she seemingly gets everything she wants. I had to tell her that what Sharpay wants most of all was to have Troy as a boyfriend, but Troy only likes Gabriella, who is very smart and does well in school.

12. Of course she's superficial.... |
|
She's 14.
We just watched the episode (and I don't even have kids) and while I agree with the assessment that she was stupid for dumping him, she is still a young girl and I can definitely see some of them making that kind of decision because of how it would look to their friends.
So while not a good role model, at least it was a somewhat honest portrayal of peer pressure (after all, when her friends found out they laughed about it...what kind of 14 year old girl wants to be with a smoking hot boyfriend who collects stuffed animals and her friends make fun of?)

133 channels and nothing is on!
The kids had serious cartoon channel withdrawels. As compesnation we pretty much buy any cartoon or kids stuff on DVD. That way they can watch it on their TV's at their own discretion. We go to the movies every week or two and they usually call the shots there. Hence...the Hanna Montana Movie...
Like I said...not as horrible as I thought it could be...the music was good but the plot was a rehash of every kids movie I've ever seen.

5. I don't mind them having Dish. I can usually get them to watch the occasional |
|
"learning show" on Discovery or History etc, so it counterbalances the brain junk food. My older son once told me that in a lot of his class studies he knows more than the other kids because of what he saw on one of those shows.

15. When we had DirecTV, I took all the channels I didn't want the kids to see off |
|
the viewing guide. We wouldn't even see them in the line-up. They just didn't exist anymore. :) It took a while to figure out which channels to dump, but it was well worth the effort. I've got Dish now, and I really miss that feature of DirecTV.

27. That's why I keep DirectTV--the ease of the parental controls. |
|
(They also have great customer service to help you with them, too.)
My six-year old is allowed to watch PBS Sprout and that's pretty much it. She is convinced that we need to buy 'Oxyclean' thanks to the heavy presence of that commercial on the channel.
To PBS's credit, I don't have to worry about commercials for disgusting food, revolting toys, and generally shitty ads. So my kid is still into Tinkerbell...and 'Sprited Away', and not that sexualized HSM, and Hannah Montana crap.

you just tell the Tivo that you don't receive that channel.
sadly, you need to pay for Tivo service to do that.

I don't want to sound like a scold, but do you realize what you said?
I can't imagine anything more damaging to a child than (1) giving them so much power in the home and (2) allowing their minds to fester with these role models and (3) allowing the immersion in shallow pop culture.
I know teenagers who grew up on this crap. They are the ones who think the main purpose of life is the ability to attract someone of the opposite gender. The damage done to girls is particularly insidious.
Why adults think that this bizarre, consumer-driven, hypersexualized interpretation of life is cute is beyond me. It infantilizes girls, and limits them as young women.
Okay, I'm done. But I'm still mad.

|
My son has a computer a TV and a DVD player in his room. During the winter he does spend some time gaming and watching DVD's. When the weather is good he is outside on his razor scooter. Even given free choice he prefers to be outside playing. I like to think most boys are that way.

I don't share your enthusiasm for the music, but the show wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I actually laughed a couple times. There was some other Disney show she had us watch about Harry Potter-like teen wizards, and that was beyond awful.
