New Yorkers, please help me with gift certificate ideas....
We have a beloved family friend who is starting graduate school at New York University this week. She has lived in Nashville and Atlanta her whole life. I would like to send her a gift certificate so she can choose something that will make her happy in her new life, but I don't know the stores in the NYU area (she will be living in graduate student housing). She had a double major as an undergraduate (psychology and theatre) and is in the master's program in drama therapy. She took a couple of years off between college and graduate school and worked in the music industry here in Nashville. I was thinking of something she could use to purchase the warmer clothes she will need this winter, but would be interested in suggestions of all kinds. What are some interesting/fun places to shop in her new neighborhood?

1. Macy's is the safe choice.
Herald Square Macy's is the largest department store in the world covering 9 stories and 3 city blocks. It's larger than most malls. They have everything. It's also one of the most expensive stores I've ever been in.

OTOH, if you're just thinking clothes...there is a discount department store here called Century 21 which is rated as one of the best discount clothes stores in America. The $ would go a lot farther there.

2. Since she likes theater so much, get her tickets to the Next Wave Festival at BAM

Of all the things I miss in NYC, the Next Wave Festival is probably the thing I miss the most. All new theatrical productions, from dance to plays to musical theater, and everything in between. All new, all experimental, all pushing the edges and boundaries of what art on stage can be.

One of the reasons I moved to NYC was to be able to go to BAM.

Fans of TLC's What Not To Wear will recognize this is a regular place where they send/take
people shopping.
